This is a photograph of a cross section of the cerebral cortex of a rat brain,  sliced using a freezing microtome, then stained by  Brentt Swetter.  The slide is approximately 50 microns thick.  The tissue was stained using cresyl violet stain, or a Nissel stain to make it visable.
