The _____________ controls everything in the body.

All ______________ have nerves.

Humans have between_____________________________ nerve cells.

Worms have _____________.

Nerves _________ and receive messages.

We can __________ our toes and __________ our eyes because of nerves.

          Parts of the Nerve

Use the BOLD words to label the parts of the nerve cell.

The CELL BODY and DENDRITES function as the “receptive” part of the cell.  The AXON and AXON TERMINAL are involved in transmission of messages to other cells.

Action Potential

When a nerve is not sending a signal it is at “rest.”

-         When do we rest?

-         Our worm is at rest.

   .

An action potential occurs when a nerve sends information down the axon, away from the cell body.

-         We know the parts of the nerve and what they do!

An action potential is a burst of electrical energy.

Does anyone know what a stimulus is?

This means that the stimulus caused the nerve’s resting potential to fire a burst of energy – the Action Potential.

When the action potential reaches its “peak” it begins to calm down to “rest” again.

What is the stimulus for our worm?
