Habitat for Humanity

A brief overview of Habitat for Humanity's goals and history

Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, nondenominational Christian housing organization.  Habitat's first headquarters was opened in Americus, Georgia by Millard and Linda  Fuller in 1976.  The couple were millionares who decided that they were going to turn away from their lavish lifestyle and re-dedicate their lives to serving God.  They decided that they were going to open an organization in which they would build particular kinds of homes, and partner with low-income families to build the homes.

They decided that the organization would be one in which volunteers and the families themselves would help to build simple, decent homes, and affordable for low-income homeowners. The homeowners are choosen based on their need, their ability to repay, and their willingness to work in partnership with Habitat. Since the low-income homeowers would not be able to purchase a home regularly Habitat allows people to purchase these homes because the homes  are sold at no profit, with no interest charged on the mortgage, homeowners and volunteers build the houses under trained supervision individuals, corporations, faith groups and others provide financial support.

In addition to its original organization helping the low-income families it helps those who are in need of rebuilding their homes after a disaster. That organization is named Habitat for Humanity International's Disaster response. Women Build, another department of Habitat, reaches out to women who don't necessarily have the skills to build, but would like to learn to. Women Build gives them the oppurtunity to learn the skills needed to construct a home.
