Introduction
Background
· Stress and
sympathetic nervous system activation allows for the release of hormones such as
cortisol that can affect memory.
· The hippocampus
plays a large role in the consolidation of information from the short term
memory to long term memory.
Previous Research
· Studies have
shown inconclusive results with some studies claiming stress hormones enhance
memory (Buchanan, & Lovallo, 2001), while others state that they impair
memory (Roozendaal, 2002).
· One study showed
that stress negatively affected short-term memory (Elzinga, & Roelofs,
2005).
· F. C. Bartlett
studied long term memory, retrieval processes, and accuracy of recall.
Present Study
· The purpose of
this study is to determine the effect of stress on long-term memory of college
students.
