Relay for Life

The Relay for Life, which began in 1985, is a celebration of life after cancer. Events occur in the hearts of major cities, in suburban neighborhoods and in the rural heartland. The Relay is a non-competitive event where trams of eight to fifteen people take turns walking or running around a track, or designated walkway, relay-style, for 24 hours straight. While waiting their turn to walk, teams camp out at the site and enjoy themselves in a block party-like atmosphere with entertainment, food and camaraderie. Prizes are awarded for teams that have the most creative tent site, and team spirit. Almost every team is formed to rally around a team member, family member or co-worker who has been touched by cancer.

The Relay raises crucial funds to support research and our local cancer patient services and public education. But it is much more than a fundraiser.

Held on The Royal Way, adjacent to the Gunster Center

University of Scranton’s Run for Others

The University of Scranton’s student body is in the process of organizing a 5k race to benefit charities of local, national, and international origin. The race will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2005 at 10:00am in Nay Aug Park. As registration details are finalized, they will be made public.

100% of the proceeds of the race will be divided among three charitable organizations. Locally, The United Neighborhood Center (UNC) is an organization which provides essential social services to the youth of the Scranton area. Nationally, Boys Hope Girls Hope is a Jesuit organization dedicated to helping youths realize their potential. Internationally, The University of Scranton’s International Service Program (ISP) sends University students to many different third world countries.

The race will be open both to the public and to the University community. Details can be found on the Run for Others website.

Sustainability

The University has undertaken an initiative to become more sustainable. Student Government has joined the initiative and is furthering it by rallying student support and spreading the word about sustainability. What is sustainability you might ask? Sustainability means protecting, preserving, and promoting the environment, humanity, and justice. The University of Scranton’s Catholic and Jesuit identity inspires and informs our attention to sustainability. As a Jesuit university we are called by Saint Ignatius to “seek God in all things.” As a Catholic university we manifest a deep concern for social justice and equality. For more information and upcoming events please visit the University of Scranton’s sustainability website.

Tsunami Relief Effort

In light of the Jesuit identity of the University of Scranton, which encourages students to be “men and women for others,” the student body is organizing a relief effort to benefit the victims of the recent Asian Tsunami. On Thursday March 10, donations will be collected in the first floor lobby of the Gunster Student Center, as well as on the Gunster Patio. Contributions can be made in the form of cash, or from a Royal Card.

Additionally, on March 10, those interested in donating a dinner meal swipe are invited to do so. Dining Services has agreed to contribute the proceeds of the donation to the relief effort. Finally, collection jars have been placed around campus, as well as in businesses in downtown Scranton. Collection points on campus can be found on both floors of the cafeteria, in Java City, in the Hyland Café, and in the University bookstore. We appreciate contributions of any size, and are grateful for the extraordinary generosity of the University community. Questions and comments should be directed to the Office of Student Government at x7462.
