Using the Genogram With an Attitude in Counselor Education and
Supervision
NARACES PRE-CONFERENCE INSTITUTE
Friday, October 5, 2001, 9 AM-12 noon
University of Massachusetts Conference Center
Amherst, Massachusetts
This interactive institute will demonstrate the use of the “genogram
with an attitude”, developed by Dr. Julia Halevy in collaboration with
Dr.Dottie Morris. Drs. Halevy and Morris will describe a method of
assisting counselor educators, students, and supervisees in
understanding their attitudes toward race, gender, ethnicity, class,
sexual orientation, age, physical ability, and appearance. They have
utilized this approach in
classroom and consultation settings, and presented at national diversity
conferences.
Participants will apply the method to their own family histories by
exploring the variety of attitudes that have been passed down to them.
The method allows participants to heighten their awareness of these
attitudes in their own lives and come to a deeper understanding of the
process by which bias may be passed down from one generation to the
next. The knowledge and insight gathered and discussed during the
workshop is intended to be useful in informing participants’ work with
counseling students and supervisees. Application to the classroom
setting will be discussed.
Julia Halevy, Dott. Ped., is Chairperson of the Department of Applied
Psychology at Antioch New England Graduate School. She received her
doctorate from the University of Florence (Italy) in 1978 and did
advanced training in family and cognitive/ behavioral therapies. She is
licensed both as a Psychologist and as a Marriage and Family Therapist
in Massachusetts, and is a Clinical Member and Approved Supervisor of
the
American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. She has a private
clinical practice and consults in intervention to organizations and
universities through her consulting practice, Dialogues in Diversity.
She founded Antioch New England Graduate School’s Diversity Committee
and is coordinator of Policies and Procedures Involving Complaints of
Sexual Harassment and Assault. She is currently conducting a qualitative
research study on the intergenerational effects of trauma on African
American descendants of slaves, Native Americans. and American
descendants of the Nazi Holocaust. Dottie R. Morris, Ph.D., is Director
of Student Affairs for Counseling Psychology at Antioch New England
Graduate School. She received her doctorate in clinical psychology from
Washington State University. She has had the opportunity to work with
diverse populations in a variety of therapy settings. Over the past
decade, she has presented workshops and talks on cross-cultural
psychology and diversity issues in general. Her desire is to continue
developing her skills, talents, and knowledge in order to work with
others to bridge the gaps between people of diverse backgrounds. The fee
for this pre-conference institute will be $20. It will run given an
enrollment of at least 10 participants. NBCC CEU’s will be available.
