Using the Genogram With an Attitude in Counselor Education and Supervision

NARACES PRE-CONFERENCE INSTITUTE
Friday, October 5, 2001, 9 AM-12 noon
University of Massachusetts Conference Center
Amherst, Massachusetts

This interactive institute will demonstrate the use of the “genogram with an attitude”, developed by Dr. Julia Halevy in collaboration with Dr. Dottie Morris. Drs. Halevy and Morris will describe a method of assisting
counselor educators, students, and supervisees in understanding their attitudes toward race, gender, ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, age, physical ability, and appearance. They have utilized this approach in classroom and consultation settings, and presented at national diversity conferences.

Participants will apply the method to their own family histories by
exploring the variety of attitudes that have been passed down to them.
The method allows participants to heighten their awareness of these
attitudes in their own lives and come to a deeper understanding of the
process by which bias may be passed down from one generation to the next.
The knowledge and insight gathered and discussed during the workshop is
intended to be useful in informing participants’ work with counseling
students and supervisees. Application to the classroom setting will be
discussed.
