Multicultural Center
AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SCRANTON

Introduction

In understanding the purpose and role of the Multicultural Center, we must first begin by noting the sociological definition of culture. Culture is the sum total of ways of living built up by a group of people and transmitted from one generation to another. It includes values, beliefs, traditions, technology, and language. From the above definition of culture, multiculturalism/diversity could be understood as bringing all these qualities together and expanding people's horizons. Considering the exigencies of the American Society, helping students achieve a multicultural perspective on what they are learning should become a priority rather than "Last on the list."

Objectives

CULTURAL UNDERSTANDING
To promote cultural understanding as of achieving academic excellence and social justice.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
To develop a community on and off campus that supports and embraces diversity and to develop community leaders.

SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT
To create an environment that encourages spiritual development through understanding of and acceptance of different religions and beliefs.

Components

CROSS CULTURAL COMMUNICATION The Center will offer newsletters and programs aimed at building understanding among all groups and different people on campus. The focus of this component will be information dissemination and dialogue.

LIAISON The Center will act as a liaison between multiethnic students and other groups both on and off campus. Since culture encompasses all aspects of our lives, the Center should maintain a balanced program which includes out-of-class educational programs such as workshops, speakers, concerts/performances, symposiums, voluntary community services, banquets, and films that focus on all cultures and issues. Because culture manifests itself in countless ways, the educational approach of the Center will be holistic and multifaceted. It seeks to move in close collaboration with the United Colors Club and theme house; the International Students Club; the Indo-American Associati on; the Spanish House; the Campus Women Center and the Council for Community Affairs.
