Remember, being an active member will help you in the long run.
Why do service?
Service is an essential part of your undergraduate experience. First and foremost, volunteering will open your eyes to the plight of those most desperately in need and help you to realize what is truly important in your life. You will witness the poverty and need in the Scranton area or, if you so choose, across the nation and abroad. You might gain exposure to such groups as the mentally ill, the elderly, children, and disabled populations. You might choose medically related service or something completely unrelated to health care.
Regardless of the type of service you choose, make sure you follow your passions. Get to know yourself a little bit in the process of choosing a service site. Discover what issues you feel strongly about, pinpoint your interests, and make use of your talents.
If you are excited about your service, you will enrich the lives of others while simultaneously enriching your own life. It is important to try out different service sites, get a feel for what you like, and then make a commitment.
