Sylvia at the door,

hand on hip,

lips sounding a
silky mess of syllables,
the boiled words
always a falling of
           feathers at her feet.

Emily inside,

cotton dress gathered
into a white cliché, pure
eyes streaked blue
half-blind,
the frantic windows of a face
I’ve always known
         and made my own.

–their voices whispered in
the ceiling, a conspiracy of
sadness etched in plaster,
the cracked lines a delicate
design: a sea of green-frothed
myth and poetic drift entering

the clenched
       mouth of a woman
