Rusted Plow

          Patrick J. O'Kernick

Against the shed that holds
tools to tend the garden,
shadows of

    Adam and Eve dance
  in the bonfire’s rhythm.
In daylight the two had
chopped that tree down. Now
the smoke designed of good
    and evil wraps round
  their salty bodies.
They never knew
    this secondhand
  brand—the sort Julia
puffs about me today
while I finish my dinner.
    I killed this myself;
  I didn’t buy it. I cooked it too;
she enjoyed it.
    I enjoy this rib
  scraping against my teeth,
surrendering its gamy meat.
    And Julia, I think she smokes
  only to create the opportunity
to extinguish cigarettes as if to say:
    OK, what now?
