Now I Kind of Understand That One
by William Carlos Williams

            Christopher Longo

I had never eaten a

cherry before

she plucked one from the

glowing refrigerator while

we stood before the open door

first cherry

and ate one herself

I kissed her—lips

so cold and so

red and so sweet

tongue so pink

and so hungry

I don’t like plums anymore

but I feel well-read
