Mazurka

Brianna L. Noll

He discovered the dance,
the girl, both products of
Mazovia, province
of Poland.

Her heartbeat, the weak beats
called to himdotted eighths
regular, circular
for accent.

They danced, his ear to her
pulse points, prompting each step—
the foot stamp, the heel click,
and the turn.

Allegretto they whorled
around the floor, threading
spatial gaps with their sound—
clip clop clip

punctuated by trills,
triplets and turns. This one
was Chopin; he could tell
by the tone.

This is mazurka,
a love story set in
a Polish province, in
triple time.
