Scream it and Scram:
             A Blues Sonnet

Brianna L. Noll

It's like the duty of her soul's to scat
these syncopated spurts of sound she scats
against the drummer's rat-a-tat-tat.

And in the smoke-dimmed room she sings oo wee
jibberin', jabberin', honey, oo wee
that girl can move, roll like a timpani.

Tuba, bass trumpet, the cat on the keys
improvise, but always in sync, switch keys
tempos, times, following her lead, scream threes

against her fours, staccato glottal stops
beneath a legato phrase that won't stop
until she dizzies and fizzles and drops.

In rolls the starlet's presto cadenza:
ripples, rills, trills, builds, halts to a dead end.
