THIRD ANNUAL "RALLY FOR NEPHCURE" TENNIS TOURNAMENT TO RAISE
AWARENESS FOR NEPHROTIC SYNDROME RESEARCH TO BE HELD AT THE UNIVERSWITY
OF SCRANTON POLI HI TENNIS COURTS AUGUST 13-14, 2005.
A tennis tournament for boys and girls to raise awareness for Nephrotic
Syndrome research will be held at the Poly Hi Tennis Courts on the campus
of The University of Scranton on Saturday and Sunday, August 13-14, tournament
director Jay DeSanto announced today.
There will be four divisions of competition for both boys and girls: 12
& under, 14 & under, 16 & under, and 18 & under. An entry
fee of $30.00 includes trophies and refreshments. All proceeds will benefit
the NephCure Foundation, whose mission is to support research seeking
the cause of Nephrotic Syndrome and Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis
(FSGS), a kidney disease that sidelined Miami Heat superstar Alonso Morning
during the height of his career in the National Basketball Association
(NBA). During the past two years the tournament had raised over $7,000
for this cause.
According to the National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearinghouse,
“Nephrotic syndrome is a condition marked by very high levels of
protein in the urine; low levels of protein in the blood; swelling, especially
around the eyes, feet, and hands; and high cholesterol. Nephrotic syndrome
can occur with many diseases caused by diabetes mellitus, but some causes
are unknown. Prevention of nephrotic syndrome relies on controlling these
diseases.”
DeSanto, an 18-year-old who will be continuing his education and tennis
career this fall at the College of the Holy Cross, has been battling Nephrotic
Syndrome for the last eleven years. His illness has not kept him on the
sidelines. This past season, he led the Comets to their 4th straight District
II title and advanced to the finals of the District II singles tournament.
He also teamed with Evan Firestone to capture his third consecutive district
doubles title. He has been an all-regional selection by the Scranton Times-Tribune
4 straight years, and has been ranked in the Middle States by the United
States Tennis Association (USTA).
