Basic Information
*We sponsor two squads:
- Purple Squad cheers for Men’s basketball games- White Squad cheers for Women's basketball games
*Cheerleaders on each squad will work for their spot and can be moved between squads throughout the year
*Both squads work together to build The University of Scranton’s Cheerleading Program
Practice Information
*Regular season practices begin in September and are held three times a week:
-Sunday 7:00pm - 9:00pm with a workout/gymnastics session from 9:00pm - 10:00pm
-Monday 8:30-10:30 pm
-Wednesday 8:30-10:30 pm
*Additional practices for competition and other special events may be held weekdays from 6:00am - 8:00am and on Saturday mornings
*Practice sessions include team meetings, stretching and conditioning, cheers, chants, jumps, stunts, and dances
*In addition to practice, each squad member is required to put in at least three hours of cardiovascular training throughout the week and do conditioning exercises daily, which include sit-ups, push-ups, and V-ups. A sign-in sheet is available in the Murray Royal's room to keep track of workout times. Aerobics classes are also offered.
Games
*Both squads cheer for all home games and a few selected away games
*Games begin at the end of November and continue through regular season until the end of February
*Post-season games may continue through the end of March
*Most games are held on Wednesday nights and Saturday afternoons or nights, but schedules are subject to change
Camp
*Both squads attend The Universal Cheerleaders Association’s (UCA) Collegiate Camp at Rutgers University the second week of August
*Camp is mandatory unless there are extreme circumstances which the coach is aware of
Competitions
*A competition squad will attend regional and/or national competitions depending on accessibility and cost
*The coach and certified judges will choose the competition squad
Basic Requirements
*Follow all rules and regulations
*Maintain a GPA required by The University’s Athletic Department
*Attend all scheduled practices (excuses will only be allowed for serious illness or conflicting University activities such as another sport or exams; those who are injured or ill are required to attend practices and games even if they cannot participate; a doctor’s excuse is required for an unexcused absence; NOTE: TIME MANAGEMENT IS KEY WHEN PARTICIPATING IN A VARSITY COLLEGIATE SPORT- athletes MUST learn how to balance schoolwork, practice and game schedules, and any work schedules, or they should not try out)
*Remain at the University during Intersession in January; on-campus housing will be provided for all athletes; however, students must purchase a meal plan if they are on-campus
*Cheer for all home games and all designated away games
*Produce proof of health insurance
*Sign a "Waiver of Liability and Hold Harmless Agreement"
*Produce a signed "Parental Release Form" in the event a cheerleader must drive to an event or ride in a car driven by a teammate
*Participate at all designated fundraisers
*Be willing to work with both teams throughout the season
Financial Obligations
*The University provides all uniforms, poms, megaphones, and signs
*Cheerleaders must purchase socks, crop tops, and briefs, in addition to camp and camp clothing
*Fundraisers are held to help defray the costs of personal items. All cheerleaders must participate in these events.
