Dan Townsend's Research Program

Current Research: For the past dozen years my main research focus has been on (1) how severe overbrowsing by white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) is impacting the ecological dynamics of northern hardwood forests, and (2) how recovery of forests might occur when and if deer populations are returned to ecologically sustainable levels.
 
Forest community level analyses in 1991-92 revealed an understory virtually devoid of herbs and of woody regeneration.
