Research Methods Lab

1
  • Proposal: Overview textbooks (preferably beyond Intro) pertaining to your research proposal
  • Get to know your friendly TAs; they’re here to help!  Be sure to sign up and meet with a TA  before your next lab period:
  1. To get some mentoring concerning Windows/Google/Microsoft Word and  Library Resources (Sign-up using Google Calendar)
  2. For some advice about searching for literature and your research proposal.

  • Be sure you have already met with a TA before your lab period this week.
  • Submit your Facebook Proposal as a Word document through Assignments  by your lab period - we'll be discussing them. (Please refer to the  list of Assignment  file names before  naming your Assignment submissions.)
  • Must complete the Plagiarism Test, print out the confirmation certificate, and bring to this lab.
  • You must have your Research Methods Lab (RML) web page up by your lab period this week (In Google).  If it just says "Research Methods Lab" at this point, we'll be happy.
One class day after
Lab 2
  • Human Behavior: Submit into your lab envelope, a copy of the first page of 2 articles that you’ve read relating to gender, relationship preference, or an adage. Linked off of your RML page, publish a separate page (you can pick your own file name) that lists both references (roughly APA style) and provide an annotated citation/reaction for your favorite one by 3:00 pm.

One class day before
Lab 3
  • Proposal: On your RML web page, place a broad topic area along with textbook source(s) for this topic (Don't worry about APA style.) by 3:00 pm. 
  • APA Typing Assignment: This is worth 2% of your total course grade. Submit via computer (by Assignments).  (Revision replaced by APA manual proficiency test) by 3:00 pm.

  • Must pass Windows/Google/Microsoft Word test by 1:00 pm the day of your lab period
  • Must bring certificate of completion for IRB Test to this lab as well.  NOTE!!! When you take this test, only do the Social and Behavioral Investigator Course.
One class day after
Lab 3
  • Proposal: Submit into your lab envelope, a copy of the first page of at least 3 articles that you’ve read relating to your proposal topic. Linked off of your RML page (you can pick your own file name), publish a separate page that lists all three references (roughly APA style) and provide an annotated citation/reaction for your favorite one by 3:00 pm.

  • Begin running Project 1 after lab this week
  • Please make sure you have already read Section 8.05 in your APA manual on Ethics in Research and Writing before your lab period this week.
  • Article Compression: Submit by your lab period the paper via Assignments.  (Article can be found in Course Documents in Blackboard.)
One class day after
Lab 4
  • Proposal: Annotated citation/reaction for one article along with listed references for at least two other articles due linked off of your RML page page with copies of first pages of all articles submitted into envelope on bulletin board by 3:00 pm.
  • Article Compression:
    • Pick up, in Course Documents in Blackboard,  your lab's combined papers after 10:00 am.
    • Critique in Word using comments.
One class day before
Lab 5
  • Proposal:  Submit via computer (by Assignments) an updated broad proposal topic, list journal tally results, and indicate target journal by 3:00 pm.
  • Article Compression:

  • Computer: APA manual proficiency test must be completed by lab this week
    • THURSDAY LABS must have the APA manual proficiency test completed by FRIDAY, March 2nd at 5:00pm
  • Article Compression: Critiques of lab's Article Compressions will be discussed during this week's lab period.
Wednesday February 28
  • Project 1: Data due by 3:00 pm  via Assignments.
  • Data for all labs will be available for pick up on Blackboard by 10:00am Friday, March 2.

Lab 5
  • Proposal: References for three articles due linked off of your RML page (one with an annotated citation) with copies of first pages of all articles submitted into envelope on bulletin board by 3:00 pm.
One class day before
Lab 6
  • Proposal: Link from your RML web page a list of the 20 topics from the survey of your target journal by 3:00 pm.

  • Article Compression: Submit via Assignments final version of article with references by Midnight.  
Wednesday
March 7
  • Project 1: Submit hard copy (h.c.) of one hypothesis test (do not use ANOVA) on the data with attached printout and interpretive annotations by 10:00 am.  Append a hand drawn figure depicting your results.  (One revision--the first submission is worth 25% of your grade.)

  •  Project 2: By class, submit one hypothesis test using a different statistical procedure from your first one--include a hand drawn figure.  You must calculate at least one variable that is used in this test.  New variable syntax should be included on your output (just save your syntax as you go - delete your old messy output and run the whole package in one run - don't worry that you're recalculating your new variables at this point, nothing bad will happen.  Comment on both the variable syntax and analyses. (One revision--the first submission is worth 50% of your grade)  Get your data  file from blackboard in course documents.

  • Proposal: By lab period, submit hard copy of full Intro (with cover sheet and reference pages).
  • Proposal: By lab period, link your running reference list off your RML webpage.
  • Proposal: Meet with Dr. Cannon for comments on proposal introduction by your next lab period (sign up sheets posted on Dr. Cannon’s door)
  • This lab is canceled/replaced by office hours to meet with Dr. Cannon to talk about your proposal intro!

  • In Lab-- Proposal: You will be making an article presentation in lab this week. The articles are selected from those the first page of which are in your folder (you can put a big "X" on any first page in your folder that you won't be referencing--you won't be asked to talk about these).  Remember, those articles that you are referencing should also be on your Running Reference List.  The first pages of all articles on the Running Reference List, of course, should also be in your folder.
  • Project 2: Hypothesis Test 2 revision due by lab.

  • Proposal: Submit hard copy of  full Methods by 3:00 pm - if you have references in this section, include a reference section for them alone.  There's no need for a title page.
One class day before
Lab 13
  • Project 3: Submit 2 hypothesis tests by 1:00 pm. AT LEAST, one of these must be ANOVA, the other must be a test you have not yet run.  The figures that accompanies this can be EITHER computer or hand generated. You must calculate at least one variable that is used in each of these tests. New variable syntax should be included on your output (just save your syntax as you go - delete your old messy output and run the whole package in one run - don't worry that you're recalculating your new variables at this point, nothing bad will happen.  Comment on both the variable syntax and analyses..  (ONE revision --the first draft is worth 75% of your grade.)

  • Proposal: Meet with Dr. Cannon for comments on proposal methods by one day after your lab (sign up sheets posted on Dr. Cannon’s door).
Monday, May 7th
  • Proposal: Abstracts due via Assignments by 3:00 pm.  Abstracts should be written in Word and published on the Web at linked off of your RML page.
    • Links to the rest of your virtual poster should be on this page. 
*NOTE: The Disclaimer that you place on your abstract page should be placed at the BOTTOM of  every virtual poster page*
 Tuesday, May 8th
  • Proposal: Provide me with a narrative (APA style not important) that describes your data set and how you will use SPSS to get all the information you need for publication and normally inquisitive data analyses (Proposal Prospectus). Submit data file (Assignments), narrative, and syntax file (the latter two should be stapled together). Don't forget to have extensive comments (circle all comments) on the syntax that outline all analyses. Due by midnight. 
Wednesday, May 9th
  • Proposal: Poster File (PDF ONLY) should be submitted through Assignments by 1pm.
  • Revision of Project 3 hypothesis tests due by noon.

  • Proposal Poster: You must have your poster up on the wall by noon (**You can put them up the night before**).  You should also have your "virtual" poster on the web by noon.  The official "Fest" is 3:00-5:00 with the group photo taken around 4:30.  If classes, or real life, preclude your attendance--post a note to that effect on Blackboard AND at your board in the department.
Week of Finals - No lab
 Tuesday, May 15th
  • Proposal: Submit hard copy of final revisions of Introduction and Methods, as well as copies of previously unsubmitted abstract pages for all articles relating to proposal. Hand in one grand-glorious proposal document with all the paper (not poster) parts you've written (including Abstract, References, and Cover Page in APA order) .  It'll warm your heart :)  ALL DUE BY 3:00 PM
