The topic for this group's presentation is the importance of
helmet use and the function of CSF in protecting the brain.
Caution: Falling Eggs (Jonathan Walsh & Phil Loscombe)
Today, we will be teaching you the importance of helmet safety.
Would you play football in the NFL without wearing pads to protect you?
Then, why would you consider putting your feet on the pedals without wearing
a helmet? Helmets protect the thing that should be considered one of
the most important parts of your body, your brain. You only have one,
so please, be careful and protect it.
In groups, we will construct helmets out of several kinds of materials
in hopes of protecting our brain better. We will then test our work
by dropping the eggs and seeing if they break or not. We will provide the
eggs, the materials, the place to drop them from, and even the cleaning
up. You just have to supply and the good ideas to test the want to
wear a helmet and protect your precious noggins every time you decide to
ride your bike.
CharEggteristics of the Brain
(Kathleen
Yoder & Jessica Policastro)
Ever wonder
why brains are wrinkled? We will show you how the brain's folds allow
it to SQUEEEEEZE into our skulls! Can you guess how much the average brain
weighs?
Our brains allow us to do so many things--we eat, drink, breathe, sleep,
smell, write, sing, dance, and the list goes on!! Something that works
so hard for us should be protected. We'll show you how a special
fluid (Cerebral Spinal Fluid) inside the skull protects it from banging
around up there!
Don't crack up! (a project you can recreate
at home)
