CURRICULUM MATERIALS COLLECTION (EDLAB)
The EDLAB curriculum materials are a part of the resources in the Media & EDLAB Resources Center, 3rd floor. The center features viewing stations and tables for comfortable use of these diverse materials.
DISTANCE LEARNING SERVICES
The Weinberg Memorial Library offers special library services to University of Scranton students who are currently enrolled in web-based courses. For a complete explanation of the services and resources available, click here. To view a list of quick links to these services, click here.
EATING, DRINKING AND SMOKING
A Vending area for drinks and snacks is located in the Pro Deo Room. The Java City Coffee Bar is located in the Pro Deo Room. There are no prohibitions on consuming food in the building. There is no smoking or chewing tobacco in any part of the building.
ELECTRONIC RESERVES
Electronic Reserves are available over the Internet. Access to articles is restricted by a password distributed by the faculty member who is teaching the course. For an item to be placed on reserve, it must comply with copyright restrictions.
FAX SERVICE
Fax service is available is at the Circulation Desk on the First Floor. Within the United States, the cost for outgoing fax pages is $1.00 per page; international faxes are $4.00 per page. Incoming faxes are $.50 per page.
FINES
The fine for overdue books is $.10 per day per item to a maximum of $10.00 per item. The fine for overdue CDs is $1.00 per day. Avoid fines by renewing books or returning them. Borrowers may renew their own materials through “My Account” on the Library's Homepage or the Library Tab on the My.Scranton portal. Books may also renewed by telephone. Book drops for returns are located on the front of the Circulation Desk. An after-hours book drop is located on the left wall of the Monroe Street lobby. All books must be returned and fines settled prior to graduation. The fine for an overdue laptop is $20.00 per first hour, $10 for succeeding hours.
FRIENDS OF THE WEINBERG MEMORIAL LIBRARY
Membership is detailed in a brochure available at the Circulation and Reference Desks. Friends of the Weinberg Memorial Library are entitled to unlimited borrowing privileges, invitations to Library programs and special events, preview of book sales, receipt of “Information Update,” the Library newsletter published in the Spring and Fall, special bookplates for any books donated to the collection, and the opportunity to volunteer for work in support of Library programs and services. Friends Student Members are entitled to borrow a total of five (5) books at any one time and enjoy the other benefits of membership listed above. Annual membership fees for the Friends are: $10.00 (student membership); $25.00 (individual membership; and $35.00 (family membership); other special giving categories are available.
GROUP STUDY ROOMS
Small group study rooms are located on the First, Second, Third, and Fourth Floors. Use is first come, first served, with preference given to groups. All materials left in the rooms or in any area of the Library are reshelved each day. Group study rooms cannot be reserved. Students should not leave unattended materials to hold the room.
HOLD REQUESTS
A hold may be placed on a book that is on loan. This prevents the book from being renewed. When the book is returned, a notice is sent to the person who placed the hold to let him/her know that the book is available. Books are held at the Circulation Desk for ten (10) days after their return. If not picked up, the books are returned to the shelves.
Hours
Library hours are posted on campus, on the Library’s home page, on the Library’s entrance doors, on the Online Public Catalog and on a telephone recording (570-941-7525). Media Resources & EDLAB hours are posted on the Media Resources & EDLAB Center door. There are extended hours during exams. The Pro Deo et Universitate Room is open 24 hours with access by Royal Card after the Library closes.
INTERLIBRARY LOANS
After checking the Weinberg Memorial Library’s holdings and finding that the Library does not own desired materials, University faculty, students and staff may borrow these materials though Interlibrary Loan (ILL). Other Library users must request ILL from their home libraries. There is no charge for borrowing books; articles are $1.50. Most requests are filled within a week, depending on the availability of the requested materials. To request materials, submit an electronic request form using the Illiad System. Complete the forms as fully as possible to facilitate processing. Reference Librarians are available to assist Library users in locating all necessary information for completing the form. When the requested item(s) arrive, the borrower receives either email or postcard notification. Articles are delivered to the user's Illiad account with a link to click on to get the article. The article remains available for 14 days. ILL books are picked up and returned to the Circulation Desk. The borrower is responsible for the article fee of $1.50 for each article secured in his/her behalf. The University of Scranton and Marywood University have a reciprocal agreement for delivering journal articles via the Internet between the two institutions at no charge to the borrower. Books may also be borrowed through PALCI E-Z Borrow.
PALCI E-Z BORROW
Direct borrowing from over 65 leading Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and West Virginia libraries is available to current University of Scranton students, faculty and staff members through PALCI E-Z BORROW. There is no charge for the service. The form requires your University RoyalNumber as your Patron ID. Look for the PALCI E-Z BORROW logo on our web pages.
LAPTOP COMPUTERS
University of Scranton students with full borrowing privileges may borrow laptop computers at the Circulation Desk for in Library use. Users with delinquent accounts are not permitted to borrow laptops. Laptops are limited to one per borrower and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. They may not be reserved in advance or recalled from another borrower. Laptops must be checked out in person. A valid Royal Card is required to check out laptops and a second form of picture ID may be required. A use agreement must be read and signed each time a laptop is checked out and the borrowed laptop must be inspected and signed in upon its return.
Laptop computers may be used anywhere in the Library except in the Pro Deo Room and the Quiet Study Room on the Fourth Floor. They may not leave the building. Wireless connections are available on all floors. Headphones must be used for sound files.
The normal loan period is three (3) hours. Laptops will not be circulated one (1) hour before the Library closes. End-of-the-day loans must be returned 30 minutes before closing. Renewals are permitted when there is no one waiting. You must bring the laptop back to the Circulation Desk to renew it.
Software available on the Library laptops includes the MS Office Suite (Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word), Internet Explorer, Thunderbird, and PowerTerm. Personal software may not be loaded onto the laptop. Any user file on the hard drive is automatically deleted when the machine is shut down. Be sure to save your work to a floppy or USB Flash drive. Library Systems staff members (941-6135) or Help Desk staff members (941-4357) are available to answer questions.
To print from a laptop, users must first save their work to their own floppy disk or USB Flash drive then print from one of workstations in any PC Lab. The closed UniPrint station is in the Pro Deo Room.
Users are required to remove e-mail profiles and/or instant messaging software before returning to the Circulation Desk.
Loss, damage, or defect noted in the laptop must be reported to the Circulation Desk immediately.
Overdue charges of $20.00 for the first hour and $10.00 for each succeeding hour are assessed to the borrowwer's account if the laptop is not returned on time. The laptop is presumed lost after that and the borrower is responsible for replacement costs of $2,500. The user is responsible for the full replacement value or repair costs if the laptop or the wireless unit if damaged, lost or stolen. Damage or loss charges for the laptop or peripherals (plus a processing fee) will be applied to your University bill.
Security Warning:
Laptops must not be left unattended. Our discovery of an unattended University laptop will result in the suspension of laptop borrowing privileges. Please, do not, under any circumstances, leave laptops or your valuables unattended. You are responsible for the laptop and peripherals charged out to you. The Library is not responsible for its loss or the loss of your personal possessions if they are left unattended.LOAN PERIODS
The normal loan period for books is 30 days. Unless a hold is pending, a borrower may renew books in person at the Circulation Desk, by telephone (941-7524), or via My Account on the Library Catalog. Books may be renewed by presenting ID; it is not necessary to bring the books to the Library. If, at the time of renewal, it is discovered that a book has a hold placed on it, that book will not be renewed and the borrower must return it.
The loan period for laptop computers is three (3) hours. To renew a laptop, it must be brought to the Circulation Desk. Renewals of laptops are not permitted if another borrower is waiting.
Media Resources materials may be borrowed by faculty and staff for a period of seven (7) days. Music compact disks may be borrowed by students for a period of three (3) days.
MEDIA & EDLAB RESOURCES CENTER
The Media & EDLAB Resources Center, located on the Third Floor, contains curriculum material and over 15,600 records, videocassettes, DVDs, and other non-print items in support of the educational efforts of the University EDLAB. Books may be borrowed for five days. Non-print materials circulate for classroom use, and for preview purposes to faculty. Playback equipment is available. Students who wish to use media in a classroom must make arrangements through their instructor. Music CDs, if not on reserve, may be borrowed for three (3) days.

The mission of the University of Scranton’s Weinberg Memorial Library is to provide information, services and programs that meet the current and anticipated educational, research and public service needs of the University and other communities. The Library is committed to supporting a culture of excellence in teaching and learning. The mission is advanced by the following goals:
Strategic Goals
- To plan a new wing for the Weinberg Memorial Library that will provide new space for an Information Commons and additional space for the Circulating Collection, Media Resources Collection, Ed Lab Collection, and Special Collections.
- To create an Information Commons incorporating the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence, and Reference Services in a new wing of the Weinberg Library.
- To facilitate freedom of inquiry, the pursuit of wisdom and personal growth and development by developing a structured, university-wide information fluency program.
Operational Goals
- To select, acquire, and maintain resource materials for supporting the educational, research and service functions of the University.
- To develop policies and procedures that will ensure the preservation and security of the Library’s resources.
- To provide space, equipment, and technology that will ensure operational efficiency, improve collection preservation, and respond to the changing needs of users and staff.
- To assist faculty and staff in their classroom instruction, research and scholarly activities.
- To promote understanding of the Library’s research capabilities and encourage the use of its resources and services.
- To implement the ACRL (Association of College and Research Libraries) "Information Literacy Standards for Higher Education" so that students' ability to locate, evaluate, use and communicate information is objectively assessed.
- To advocate the productive use of the Library services and to enable students to practice a lifelong habit of self-education.
- To provide alternative delivery modes for remote users of Library resources and services.
- To serve the needs of students, faculty, and staff and to support cooperative efforts of libraries in general by developing and promoting a quality program of resource sharing.
- To ensure academic integrity by educating users through programs of user instruction on plagiarism, copyright infringement, and critical evaluation of information sources.
- To provide a skilled and competent faculty and staff to develop, maintain, and facilitate the use of the Library’s resources and services.
- To seek and secure the financial support necessary for the continuation and expansion of the operation of the Library.
- To administer the Library’s budgets and promote optimum use of its financial resources.
- To promote and support communication at all levels throughout the Library.
- To provide leadership in the interpretation, support and promotion of the Library through the development of relationships with the University administration, CTLE, academic departments, students, alumni and the community-at-large.
- To enrich the environment of learning and academic support services through a program of systematic assessment of the effectiveness of the Library’s resources and services.
ONLINE DATABASES
The Library subscribes to over 130 electronic databases. For a grid of the web-based databases, go to the WML Homepage and click on A-Z List of Databases. The Library has access to over 16,000 full-text journals.
Computer database searches on Dialog and other databases accessed by modem-equipped computers are also available. These searches are executed by Librarians. Fees are based on the length of connect-time to the database and the fee structure of the producer of the database for printing. The average cost is $10 to $25; the average length of a search is 20 minutes. To schedule a search, inquire at the Reference Desk.
Access to databases from off-campus is through a proxy server. Please click on the name of the database you wish to use and you will be taken to a validation screen which will prompt you for your My.Scranton Username and Password.
