Information Update http://academic.scranton.edu/department/wml/newsletter.html The Weinberg Memorial Libary Information Update Newsletter en-us William Bernhardt to Receive Distinguished Author Award http://academic.scranton.edu/department/wml/ARCHIVED/features/fall09s-1.html The talents and skills of the 2009 Recipient of the Royden B. Davis Distinguished Author Award, William Bernhardt, reflect many aspects of the contemporary library. William Bernhardt is an author, a teacher, a mentor, a researcher, a composer, and communicator. As an author, Mr. Bernhardt had sold more than 10 million books in various countries. Library Journal has called him the "master of the courtroom drama." The Vancouver Sun dubbed him "the American equivalent of P.G. Wodehouse and John Mortimer." Electronic Masters and Honors Theses http://academic.scranton.edu/department/wml/ARCHIVED/features/fall09s-2.html Alumni: did you write a masters or honors thesis to cap off your University studies? If so, we want to hear from you! The Weinberg Memorial Library is currently building a digital collection of Electronic Masters and Honors Theses. From Our Archives to You, Digitally http://academic.scranton.edu/department/wml/ARCHIVED/features/fall09s-3.html The Weinberg Memorial Library's Special Collections and University Archives have long held fascinating books, manuscripts, and photographs. Because of their historic value and uniqueness, these materials could not leave the Archives reading room and so were only accessible to researchers who were able to come to campus during regular business hours. Shifting Roles in the Weinberg Memorial Library http://academic.scranton.edu/department/wml/ARCHIVED/features/fall09s-4.html It has been an exciting year of transitions in the Weinberg Memorial Library. Last summer we wished a fond farewell to Katie Duke, our Information Literacy Coordinator. In September 2008 we welcomed Part-time Public Services Librarian George Aulisio to our team; his primary job role was to serve students and faculty at the Reference Desk during the day, while we conducted a thorough search for a new Information Literacy Coordinator. This summer we are pleased and excited to announce that our search for a new Information Literacy Coordinator was successful, and the librarian who will be following in Katie Duke's footsteps is our own Bonnie Oldham. Formerly the Distance Learning Library Services Coordinator, Bonnie brings five years of experience in the Weinberg Memorial Library to this new position, not to mention 19 total years of experience in academic libraries. Joining the Twitterverse http://academic.scranton.edu/department/wml/ARCHIVED/service-policies/fall09sp-1.html This February, the Weinberg Memorial Library became one of the estimated 6 million users of Twitter, the microblogging service that is currently taking the internet by storm. The Library is using the service in several ways. So, what's the difference? Credo Reference http://academic.scranton.edu/department/wml/ARCHIVED/reseach-tools/fall09r-1.html The use of reference books has been steadily declining since Google has made it incredibly simple to find information. Searching for any given term or phrase on Google will return thousands of results, and often what seems to be the most relevant result is the first, second, or third link on the page. Google is fine and dandy for doing a lot of great things, but quite frankly it misses the mark when doing serious academic research. The Patriot Act - Still an Issue http://academic.scranton.edu/department/wml/ARCHIVED/features/fall09s-9.html Despite the change in presidential administrations, the USA Patriot Act, a law rushed through Congress shortly after the 9/11 attacks, remains a hotly contested issue. Key provisions of the Act will sunset on December 31, 2009, and advocates on both sides of the issue have come forward with campaigns to either reform the Act or to continue its empowerment of government to monitor internet and library users. Staff Changes http://academic.scranton.edu/department/wml/ARCHIVED/features/fall09s-10.html The Newest Friends of the Library http://academic.scranton.edu/department/wml/ARCHIVED/features/fall09s-11.html We would like to thank the newest members of the Friends of the Weinberg Memorial Library for their contributions to our Library Librarians Have Departmental Retreat http://academic.scranton.edu/department/wml/ARCHIVED/features/fall09s-12.html The librarians of the Weinberg Memorial Library participated in their first departmental retreat on Wednesday, June 17, 2009. Bonnie Oldham, Coordinator of Information Literacy and Kristin Yarmey-Tylutki, Digital Services Librarian initiated the retreat to help the various departments in the library integrate their individual activities and projects with the overall strategic plan of the library and the University.
