BASIC INFORMATION SOURCE GUIDE 17

Following is a guide to reference works of use to the student of Spanish language and literature. While the emphasis is on books in Spanish, some English-language works are included.


  The Oxford Spanish Dictionary.  Oxford:  Oxford University Press, 2003.  (REF PC 4640 .O94 2003) – This is just one of many Spanish-English dictionaries.

            The Oxford-Duden Pictorial Spanish-English Dictionary.  2nd edition.  Oxford:  Clarendon Press, 1995.  (REF PC 4629 .O94 1995) – Each picture is of a situation, object, or setting, giving Spanish and English words for the component parts.

            Martínez, Augustín.  Multicultural Spanish Dictionary:  How Everyday Spanish Differs from Country to Country.  Rockville, MD:  Schreiber Publishing, 1999.  (REF PC 4640 .M26 1999) – This dictionary concentrates on the differing vocabularies of various Spanish-speaking countries.

            Harrap’s Diccionario de Expresiones Idiomáticas; Dictionary of Idioms.  London:  Harrap, 1991.  (REF PC 4460 .H377 1991) – Translates idiomatic expressions in both languages, giving examples of use.

Enciclopedia Hispánica.  Barcelona:  Editorial Barsa Planeta, 2001.  (REF AE 61 .E52 2001) – Divided into four parts.  Volumes labelled “Macropedia” give lengthy entries.  The two volumes labeled “Micropedia” give very short definitions of terms and index the “Macropedia.”  The “Temapedia” volume presents very lengthy essays on broad topics.  The “Datapedia” contains statistical tables on countries of the world, an almanac, historical tables, and an atlas.

            Lexipedia:  Diccionario Enciclopédico.  México:  Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1994-1995.  (REF AG 65 .L4 1994)  -- 4 volumes.  First three volumes have short entries arranged alphabetically.  Volume 4 has Spanish rules of grammar, punctuation, spelling, a thesaurus, etc.

            Enciclopedia Universal Ilustrada.  Madrid:  Espasa-Calpe, 1931. (REF AE 61 .E6) – 70 vols.

LEXIS-NEXIS – Provides full text articles from Spanish-language newspapers and wire services.  Click on News in the top red menu.  Then choose Spanish Language News, Combined from the Select Sources drop box.   When searching use Spanish (not English) keywords, but use English language Boolean operators (and, or, and not).

CLASE AND PERIODICA --  Indexes Latin American journals in the social sciences, humanities, science and technology.  Not full text. 

MLA – This database, produced by the Modern Language Association, indexes articles appearing in literary journals and selected books from the late 19th century to the present.  It covers all modern languages and literatures including Spanish.   Not full text.  MLA is also available as a print index back to 1921.
