General Information
The Library is open 99.5 hours per week with extended hours during exam periods. Use the campus photo-identification Royal Card for Internet printing at UniPrint stations on the first and second floors, gaining entrance to the Pro Deo Room after hours, photocopying, printing from microformats and for vending machines. In the bound journal area, there is a Value Transfer Station (VTS) for dispensing Visitor cards and for adding value to Royal Cards. Photocopies and printing are 7 cents per page. Students have 200 free pages of computer printing a year. Photocopiers are located in the Pro Deo Room, in bound journals on the first floor and near current periodicals on the second floor.
The Library uses the Library of Congress classification system. Library book call numbers have a combination of letters and numbers to indicate the subject and location of books.
To assist you with the use of the building and its resources, The Library has an extensive Information Literacy Program for our students, faculty, staff, and administration. The Pro Deo et Universitate Room features a panoramic view of the University Commons. The study facility and PC lab are open 24 hours for University students, faculty and staff. Library computers are password protected so that only currently affiliated users can access them. A hot line links the PC lab to the Information Resources Help Desk. Students can download, email or print from the Internet. There are two laser printers available. Campus, emergency, and pay telephones are available in the vending area. The Pro Deo Room also has a Java City coffee bar. Picnic tables are located outside the building in Galvin Terrace.
At the Circulation desk, users borrow and return Library, Interlibrary Loan and PALCI books. Faculty members place required readings on Reserve at this desk. Electronic Reserves, ERes, are available over the Internet. An afterhours book drop is available in the outer lobby. The Library has reciprocal agreements for direct borrowing from the Northeastern Pennsylvania Library Network, NPLN (area colleges and public libraries), and through Pennsylvania Academic Libraries Consortium, Inc., PALCI. Students can borrow laptop computers at the Circulation desk for use inside the Library. The stack areas on all floors have wireless connections to the Internet.
Technical Services, Acquisitions, Cataloging and Serials are located on this floor. From these offices books and periodicals are ordered, received, cataloged, and processed for the shelf.
Group study rooms are available on the first, second, third and fourth floors.
Bound journals are shelved on this floor. There are also computer workstations and two photocopiers in the bound journal area.Second Floor
The Reference desk and Reference offices are here. Consult Librarians on resources and techniques for using the Library and its resources. The Electronic Indexes area features Internet access and web-based databases. Eighty computers are available for Internet searching. The Library has approximately 125 databases including access to over 16,000 full-text journals. Users can check access to full-text and Library holdings from journal lists. There are databases for every discipline.
There are three computers for public access to the Internet.
The Interlibrary Loan office generates and processes loans from other libraries. This gives Library users access to resources not owned by Weinberg Memorial Library. Users may also borrow directly through PALCI E-Z Borrow.
The Library currently has approximately 1,700 print periodical subscriptions. There are reader/printers for microfilm periodicals and newspapers and microfiche such as ERIC and historical documents.
There is one photocopier on this floor.
Current Periodicals, print indexes and abstracts and the Reference collection are shelved on this floor.
Two group study rooms are available on this floor.Third Floor
Library Systems oversees the use of computer technology in the Library.
The Media Resources Collection includes 15,000 non-print materials and EDLAB, curriculum materials.
Two Information Literacy Labs (Rooms 305 and 306) are used to instruct students in the research techniques and processes.
Science Reference books and the circulating collection PR-Z are shelved on this floor. There are approximately 470,000 books and periodical volumes in the total Library collection.
There are three group study rooms and a high-tech group room on this floor.Fourth Floor
The Office of the Dean of the Library is located on this floor.
A Quiet Study Room provides space for those who require quiet for concentration.
The University Archives and Special Collections includes a secured, climate-controlled room for the preservation of the history of the University, faculty publications, local history and a small collection of rare books.
Circulating books G-PQ are shelved on this floor.
There are four group study rooms on this floor.Fifth Floor
The Heritage Room features panels by artist Trevor Southey depicting Art, Religion and Science in the Lackawanna Valley and in the world. A descriptive brochure is available in the Heritage Room. There is a spectacular view of the campus and city from Diane’s Garden which surrounds the Heritage Room.
