Keeping up to day in the field of nursing is essential. This list of library resources is intended to aid you in your search for information found in the nursing/medical/health literature.  Need additional help, consult the librarians at the Reference Desk on the second floor. 


ABI/Inform Global
Indexes over 18,000 worldwide business periodicals for information on advertising, marketing, economics, human resources, finances, taxation and computers. You may also find facts on over 60,000+ companies.  See ProQuest for a full description.  Proquest will help with creating a bibliography and citing the bibliography in one of several styles.  Tutorial Available.

Blackwell Synergy
Full-text collection of over 1 million articles from 850 journals.  Journals are categorized by subject and nursing students have four subject areas which would be useful to them: Health Sciences, Medicine, Social and Behavioral Sciences and Law and Criminology.  Advanced option allows searching in those journals with full subscription access rights. Where there is not full subscription access rights, the users see an abstract of the article.  The user may purchase the article from Blackwell Synergy or use more cost effective InterLibrary Loan (ILL).

CINAHL with Full Text   (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature)
Contains citations to articles published in more than 1,200 journals. There are some full-text articles. CINAHL indexes selected books, book chapters, pamphlets, pamphlet chapters, dissertations and masters’ theses, audiovisuals, and software.  Researchers can check the OnLine Catalog of the Weinberg Memorial Library to see if the book resources are part of our collection, if not t the user may request books through Palci EZ-Borrow  or WorldCat.  Tutorial Available.Top of page

The Cochran Library
This site provides full text access to information compiled by Cochrane Collaboration. Purpose of the database is to provide reviews of the best evidence from clinical trials in medicine. Coverage is from 1991 to present. Updated quarterly.  Tutorial Available .Top of page

Consumer Health Complete
This database provides the consumer with understandable health information and medical information.  It includes medical encyclopedias, popular reference books, and magazine articles. Provided by Access PA.  Tutorial Available.Top of page

Emerald
Emerald Library is a collection of 130 academic and professional journals primarily from the MCB University Press based in Bradford, UK.  Coverage for this full text database is from 1989 to the present.  Tutorial Available

JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association)
The Journal of the American Medical Association is alone in this database.  User requires a special password and ID available from the Reference desk. #4000/4001.Top of page

JAMA Patient Page
About 390+ entries; each includes a basic overview of the topic, charts and graphs, medical procedures and additional useful information.  Many of the Patient Pages are also available in Spanish.Top of page

Lexis-Nexis
Provides full-text access to periodicals.  Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe is a valuable source for both legal information (including health care law) and news information (including medical/nursing news).
These can be search simultaneously or individually.  Updated daily, users can limit results by days, months or years.  This database contains 5200+ sources. Use the left menu to located specific needed resources.Top of page

Medline/PubMed
PubMed, the search engine developed by the National Library of Medicine, provides free public access to MEDLINE, a database of more than 10 million bibliographic citations and abstracts in the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, health care systems, and preclinical sciences. Coverage extends back to 1966 and new material is incorporated weekly.  Tutorial AvailableTop of page

MedLine (First Search)
Coverage is the same as the National Library of Medicine’s Medline/PubMed but the  First Search feature “ILL or InterLibrary Loan” makes this a useful resource when a needed article is unavailable Full-Text in any of our subscribed to databases.  Tutorial AvailableTop of page

Newsbank
Similar to a clipping service this is a database of full-text news resources consisting of more than 500 regional, national, and international newspapers and newswire sources. Coverage is from 1992 to the present and is updated daily.  Articles are selected for inclusion rather than having full content of the newspapers.  Under Hot Topics there is a section Science and Health Research TopicsTop of page

PsycArticles via Ovid
Published by the American Psychological Association (APA), the APA Educational Publishing Foundation, the Canadian Psychological Association, and Hogrefe & Huber PsycARTICLES via Ovid is a database of full-text articles.  Journal coverage 1985-present  Tutorial Available.Top of page

PsycINFO
Provides citations with abstracts from more than 1,300 international journals plus books and book chapters containing the literature of psychology and the behavioral sciences. Coverage - 1887 to the present.  Tutorial AvailableTop of page

SAGE
SAGE Publications publishes over 460 journals in Business, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Science, Technology and Medicine. SAGE Journals Online is the online delivery platform that provides online access to the full-text content of individual SAGE journals.  Tutorial Available.Top of page

Wilson Databases
Wilson Web hosts several databases that are applicable to the field of nursing, including Applied Science Full Text (good for science information, includes professional journals), General Science Full Text (good for basic medical information) and Readers’ Guide (good for public health and popular information on nursing).  Tutorial Available.Top of page

 

Dictionary of Nursing Research and Theory
Need definitions of terms that are currently being used in the nursing literature this is a good place to start.
Each edition adds new terms allowing the researcher to keep abreast of changes in the literature.    (REF RT 81.5 .P69 2006).

Gale encyclopedia of medicine
Multivolume set that will give you some basic information about your topic.  (REF RC41. G35).

Medline/PubMed
The Bookshelf is a growing collection of biomedical books that can be searched directly by typing a concept into the textbox and selecting the Full-Text book that appears.

MERCK Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy
Revised Annually. Essential information on diagnosing and treating medical disorders.
(REF RC55 .M4).

Physicians’ Desk Reference
Revised annually, this is the most commonly used source for information about currently available prescription drugs. Includes generic, trade name and product category indexes as well as a very useful picture identification section.  (REFDESK RS 75 .P5).
