William Bernhardt to Receive Distinguished Author Award (Fall 2009)
The talents and skills of the 2009 Recipient of the Royden B. Davis Distinguished Author Award,William Bernhardt William Bernhardt, reflect many aspects of the contemporary library. William Bernhardt is an author, a teacher, a mentor, a researcher, a composer, and communicator. As an author, Mr. Bernhardt had sold more than 10 million books in various countries. Library Journal has called him the "master of the courtroom drama." The Vancouver Sun dubbed him "the American equivalent of P.G. Wodehouse and John Mortimer." > Full story

Shifting Roles in the Weinberg Memorial Library (Fall 2009)
It has been an exciting year of transitions in the Weinberg Memorial Library. Last summer we wished a fond farewell to Katie Duke, our Information Literacy Coordinator. In September 2008 we welcomed Part-time Public Services Librarian George Aulisio to our team; his primary job role was to serve students and faculty at the Reference Desk during the day, while we conducted a thorough search for a new Information Literacy Coordinator. The University of Scranton Digital Yearbook Collection (Spring 2009)
The Weinberg Memorial Library's digital collections now include the University of Scranton yearbooks, from the 1916 St. Thomas College Aquinas to the 2007 Windhover. The 74-volume collection, containing almost 20,000 pages, was digitized by OCLC Preservation Services in Bethlehem, PA, and published to the web using CONTENTdm software. > Full story

Graduate Academic Integrity Tutorial Developed (Fall 2008)
To help undergraduates gain an understanding of plagiarism and academic integrity a tutorial was developed and implemented during the summer and fall of 2007; 97% of the freshmen worked through the tutorial and signed the Honor Pledge. > Full story

Katie Duke Retires (Fall 2008)
Professor Katie DukeKatie S. Duke retired in August after serving as Coordinator for Information Literacy for the past twenty-three years. Born in Chickasha, Oklahoma and reared in Potterville, California, Katie attended California Baptist College where she first found her love for libraries while employed as a page in the school's library. > Full story

Is The Library Really Deserted? (Spring 2002)
The November 16, 2001 issue of the Chronicle of Higher Education featured a cover story entitled "The Deserted Library." Scott Carlson, a staff reporter for the journal, gathered statistical data, conducted interviews, and provided much anecdota information to support his premise that fewer students are visiting the library buildings on their campuses for information retrieval, studying, or socializing. Instead, he argues, they are accessing much of their informational needs from desktop computers in their dorm rooms and homes, or from laptop computers from virtually anywhere on campus or off. > Full story

From The Library of The Central American University in San Salvador (Fall 1999)
This past summer Reference Librarian, Joe Fennewald. accompanied other faculty and staff from the University of Scranton and Scranton Preparatory School to El Salvador. In preparation of their trip, Mr. Fennewald contacted Dr. Katherine Miller, Directora de Biblioteca Universidad Centroamericana. She expressed the need for books, compact disks and records, art slides, and a computer scanner. Alexander Pope First Editions Donated To Library (Fall 1995)
Brian J. Murray and his wife Diane have donated a collection of first editions by Alexander Pope to the Weinberg Memorial Library in Memory Louis D, Mitchell, Ph.D. Mr. Murray, a University trustee, earned a bachelor's in English in 1967; Dr. Mitchell has a member of the University English faculty for 28 rears until his death in 1989. > Full story

Bibliographic Instruction WorkshopCultural diversity and bibliographic instruction (BI) were united in the form of a 2 1/2 hour workshop led by Jane Wang, Library faculty, on Oct. 15, 1993. Over the summer ordering began on books selected for acquisition in the Library's core undergraduate collection development project.
