This list of library resources is intended to aid you in your research in the field of Computer Science. Electronic indexes available through the Library are listed first, print sources second, and internet resources last. This handout is meant to be a guide, not to answer specific questions. Please consult a librarian at the Reference Desk for more detailed assistance. You may also call to schedule an appointment (941-4000).

Emerald
Emerald Library is a collection of 130 academic and professional journals primarily from the MCB University Press Based in Bradford, UK.  This database includes about 20,000 fully referenced, scholarly articles covering a wide range of topics. Coverage for this full text database is from 1989 to the present.  Although the primary focus of this database is management journals, there is overlap with information sciences in the areas of  Information Management, and topics relating to project management, quality control (testing).

Kluwer Online (Now Springerlink)
Kluwer provides electronic access to 720+ full text journals of Kluwer Academic Publishers. Subjects covered include science and technology, biological, agricultural and environmental sciences, medicine, business, humanities and social sciences, and law; coverage is from 1995 to the present. A PDF icon will lead to the full text articles. Top of page

ProQuest (1980-present)
ProQuest is a collection of 5 databases you may search individually or simultaneously. The databases most appropriate for computer science are ProQuest Research and the business related databases such as ABI/Inform.  Approximately 60% of the articles are full text and may be e-mailed, printed or downloaded.Top of page

Science Direct
Includes the full text of 175 Academic Press journals. Its aim is to improve access to scientific journals starting with the complete 1996 issues. Over 2000 articles are added monthly. Of the many subject areas  covered in this database, those likely to be of interest for computer science are applied sciences (including computer science, engineering, decision sciences) and business, management and accounting. Wilson Web
Wilson Web hosts several databases that are applicable to computer programming, including Applied Science Full Text (good for engineering and technology information, including professional journals), General Science Full Text (good for basic information science material) and Library Literature and Information Science (good for information science, particularly related to information retrieval).Top of page

Dictionaries and Encyclopedias

Henderson, Harry. Encyclopedia of computer science and technology.  This one-volume encyclopedia is focused on IT related terminology such as 'hashing' and 'compiler'. Each term is described with several paragraphs and provides suggestions for additional reading on the topics and related terms. Biographical information is also provided.  Indexing is provided as well as appendices noting additional resources, chronology, and awards.   [REF QA76.15 .H43 2003]

Encyclopedia of computer science.  This volume provides more advanced explanations of computing related terminology, which is broken down into nine major categories. In addition to several indexes into the material, the appendices provide lists of such items as relevant journals, acronyms, academic departments, as well as a timeline.  [REF QA76.15 .E48 2000]

Encyclopedia of software engineering. Edited by John J. Marciniak.  This two volume set is a much more in-depth look at some of the topics than the other encyclopedias noted. The focus is broader and incorporates concepts
such as acceptance testing and fault tolerance.  Many of the articles provide lengthy bibliographical information and Top of pageindexing is provided .  [REF QA76.758 .E53 2002]

McGraw-Hill personal computer programming encyclopedia: languages and operating systems. Edited by William J. Birnes. This volume provides information appropriate for both beginning programmers and those who are more experienced. It covers several programming languages, and programming design among many other topics. Top of page

Directories

Computing and software design career directory.  Edited by Allen B. Tucker, Jr. This directory provides good basic explanations of the different types of careers you might follow with a degree in computer science.  It also provides some solid explanations of resume writing specifics for IT posit-ions and how to prepare for your job search. 
There is also a section on internships. (Katie - some of this is really dated, but I didn't see anything else like it on the Top of pageshelves.) [REF QA76.25 .C56]

Handbooks

The computer science and engineering handbook. This extensive handbook includes sections on algorithms, AI, database design and query optimization, and Human-Computer Interaction, just to name a few. Each section includes a glossary of the specialized vocabulary used and a bibliography.  Indexes are provided for subjects,

Database Programming with JDBC and JAVA. This O'Reilly book provides introductory information on databases, and then provides information on JDBC data access classes, APIs, architecture and transaction management, Top of pageamong other topics.  [QA76.9.D26 R44 2000]

Dibble, Peter C. Real-time Java : platform programming .  This volume discusses the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), garbage collection, the Real-Time Java Platform and related topics. Published by Sun Microsystems Press.   [REFTop of page QA76.73.J38 D53 2002]

Reilly, Edwin D. Milestones in computer science and information technology.  This volume includes brief, non-technical descriptions of topics that the author deemed to have significant impacts on the progress of computing and information technology, or were essential building blocks needed for later developments in technology.  The presentation is alphabetical by topic, but several indexes are provided to aid the user in finding a specific topic, Top of pagesuch as by name.

Style Manuals/Writing

Publication manual of the American Psychological Association. 5th ed. Often referred to as the APA Manual, this reference book spells out all the rules for manuscript preparation in the social sciences. The latestTop of page edition is kept at the Reference Desk. [REF DESK BF 76.7 .P83 2001

There are many excellent sources of information available on the Internet. Listed below are just a few. 

The Open Directory Project - This website contains an extensive list of websites related to various aspects of programming and computers, such as programming, algorithms, and artificial intelligence.  It also has links that
will take you to the same information in other languages, such as Spanish.

Sun Developer Network  - This website is provided by the company which sells Java. For access as a student, you must sign up as a member (which is free). This section includes tutorials and forums, which are a commonly used tool among programmers who need assistance.

Digital Librarian: Computers - Numerous websites, including the Computing Research Repository and a collection
of Computer Science bibliographies.Top of page

COBOL Center Reference  - This a list of helpful websites if you are trying to work through a problem in COBOL
and includes links to the IBM manuals.Top of page

W3 Schools - Contains free tutorials on HTML, XML, Structured Query Language (SQL), and numerous other computer languages. Top of page
