Ask-A-Librarian
Users may communicate electronically with a Reference Librarian by submitting questions via live chat, instant messenger, or by email - more information could be found at the Ask-A-Librarian Web Page. Email questions are generally answered within 24 hours. The Chat Virtual Reference Service is available 24/7. Instant messaging with a University of Scranton Librarian is available Sunday through Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Borrowing Privileges
All currently enrolled University of Scranton students, faculty, administration, staff, alumni, Scranton Preparatory students, and Friends of the Weinberg Memorial Library have borrowing privileges. University students, faculty, staff, and administration are issued picture Royal Cards. Royal Cards are swiped or scanned to charge out books, reserve items, and to use media materials. Lost Royal Cards must be replaced at the Royal Card office but should be reported to the Library to prevent unauthorized use.

Other categories of borrowers must register at the Circulation Desk to obtain a Library card. The first time a user borrows materials, the barcoded ID is activated at the Circulation Desk. Report lost cards immediately, as you would with a credit card, to prevent charges from being made against the account.

Reference books, current and bound periodicals do not circulate. “In-Library use only” materials must be returned to the Circulation Desk before the Library closes. Most media materials do not circulate and must be used in the viewing/listening area. Music CDs, if not on Reserve, may be charged out for 3 days. Students may make special arrangements to use media in classroom presentations.

  1. Set the ring type on your cell phone or pager to a non-audible signal.
  2. If you do receive a call or if you need to make a call, please move to either a stairwell, the Pro Deo Room, or go outside the Library.
Confidentiality
Library circulation records are confidential. Pennsylvania Act 90 prohibits a library from revealing information about borrowers.
Copy Machines
Copiers are available for print and micro formats. Copies are 7 cents per page.

A Value Transfer Station, located on the first floor, is used to add value to Royal and Visitor Cards. Purchase Visitor copy cards at the circulation desk. Copy machines are located on the First Floor in the Pro Deo Room, in the Bound Journal area and near the Microfilm/fiche area on the Second Floor. There are two UniPrint stations (one on the First Floor and one on the Second Floor) for printing copies from computer workstations. Each student’s Royal Card has 250 free prints per year. When the free prints have been consumed, the UniPrint Station debits the Royal Card account at 7 cents per page.

Annual membership fees for the Friends are: $10.00 (student membership); $25.00 (individual membership; and $35.00 (family membership); other special giving categories are available.
Group Study Rooms
Small group study rooms are located on the First, Second, Third and Fourth Floors. Use is on a first-come basis, with preference given to groups. All materials left in the rooms or in any area of the Library are reshelved each day. Group study rooms cannot be reserved. Students should not leave personal items unattended in an attempt to hold the room.
Hold Requests
A hold may be placed on a book that is on loan. This prevents the book from being renewed. When the book is returned, a notice is sent to the person who placed the hold to let him/her know that the book is available. Books are held at the Circulation Desk for ten (10) days after their return. If not picked up, the books are returned to the shelves.
Hours
Library hours are posted on campus, on the Library’s home page, on the Library’s entrance doors, on the Online Public Catalog and on a telephone recording (570-941-7525). Media Resources & EDLAB hours are posted on the Media Resources & EDLAB Center door. The library’s hours are extended during final exams. The Pro Deo et Universitate Room is open 24 hours with access by Royal Card after the Library closes.  The Pro Deo Room is closed over the Christmas/New Year holiday when the University is closed between the Fall semester and the beginning of Intersession.
Interlibrary Loans
After checking the Weinberg Memorial Library’s holdings and finding that the Library does not own desired materials, University faculty, students, and staff may borrow these materials though Interlibrary Loan (ILL). Other Library users must request ILL from their home libraries. There is no charge for borrowing books; articles are $1.50. Most requests are filled within a week, depending on the availability of the requested materials. To request materials, submit an electronic request form using the Illiad System. Fill-in as much information as possible on the form to facilitate processing. Reference Librarians are available to assist Library users in locating all necessary information for completing the form. When the requested item(s) arrive, the borrower receives a notification email. Articles are delivered to the user's Illiad account with a link to the requested article. The article remains available for 14 days. ILL books are picked up and returned to the Circulation Desk. The borrower is responsible for the article fee of $1.50 for each article secured in his/her behalf. Books may also be borrowed through PALCI E-Z Borrow.
Laptop Computers
University of Scranton students with full borrowing privileges may borrow laptop computers at the Circulation Desk for in-Library use only. Users with delinquent accounts are not permitted to borrow laptops. Laptops are limited to one per borrower and are available on a first-come basis. They may not be reserved in advance or recalled from another borrower. Laptops must be checked out in person. A valid Royal Card is required to check out laptops and a second form of picture ID may be required. A use agreement must be read and signed each time a laptop is checked out and the borrowed laptop must be inspected and signed-in upon its return.

Laptop computers may be used anywhere in the Library except in the Pro Deo Room and the Quiet Study Room on the Fourth Floor. They may not leave the building. Wireless connections are available on all floors. Headphones must be used for sound files.

The normal loan period is three (3) hours. Laptops will not be circulated one (1) hour before the Library closes. End-of-the-day loans must be returned 30 minutes before closing. Renewals are permitted when there is no one waiting. You must bring the laptop back to the Circulation Desk to renew it.

Software available on the Library laptops includes the MS Office Suite (Access, Excel, PowerPoint and Word), Internet Explorer, Thunderbird and PowerTerm. Personal software may not be loaded onto the laptop. Any user file on the hard drive is automatically deleted when the machine is shut down. Be sure to save your work to a USB Flash drive or to email your work to yourself. Library Systems staff members (941-6135) or Technology Support Center staff members (941-4357) are available to answer questions.

To print from a laptop, users must first save their work to their own USB Flash drive or email account, then print from one of workstations in any PC Lab. UniPrint stations are in the Pro Deo Room and on the second floor of the Reference Department.   Sending prints from wireless computers and laptops is expected to be available in 2009.

Loss, damage, or defect noted in the laptop must be reported to the Circulation Desk immediately.

Overdue charges of $20.00 for the first hour and $10.00 for each succeeding hour are assessed to the borrower's account if the laptop is not returned on time. The laptop is presumed lost after that and the borrower is responsible for replacement costs of $2,500. The user is responsible for the full replacement value or repair costs if the laptop or the wireless unit is damaged, lost or stolen. Damage or loss charges for the laptop or peripherals (plus a processing fee) will be applied to your University bill.

Security Warning:
Laptops must not be left unattended. Our discovery of an unattended University laptop will result in the suspension of laptop borrowing privileges. Please, do not, under any circumstances, leave laptops or your valuables unattended. You are responsible for the laptop and peripherals charged out to you. The Library is not responsible for its loss or the loss of your personal possessions.

Public Access Computer Policy
The University of Scranton, a private Jesuit institution, provides access to the public for RESEARCH and EDUCATIONAL use only. Leisure use of the computers—games, chat, social activities, loading or downloading programs—is prohibited. Guests may use the computer for one hour, even if other machines are available and no one is waiting. Members of the public may only use the three computers designated as "Public Terminals." These computers are located on the second floor on a round table. Any member of the public using a password protected computer will immediately be asked to leave the building. Infraction of any of these policies will result in the loss of a guest’s use of Public Access computers.
Refund Policy
Report any printing, copying or microfilm malfunctions to the Reference Desk. The Librarian will either get a good copy for you or will contact the Circulation desk to have a refund placed on your RoyalCard. Problems with photocopiers can also be reported to the Circulation desk.
Quiet Study Room
Located on the Fourth Floor, the Quiet Study Room provides space for individual, quiet study. This area is designated for quiet study only.
Reference
The Weinberg Memorial Library has an extensive Reference Collection. High demand books are shelved behind the Reference Desk. You must sign a card to borrow these even though you will be using them in the building. Science reference books and indexes and abstracts are located on the Third Floor following the “Z” Library of Congress Classification.   Reference service is also available by submitting questions through E-mail, by Instant Messaging “UofSRefDesk” using AIM, MSN, Yahoo!, or Google Talk or use the Ask-a-Librarian virtual reference service. Also, the library and the librarians are accessible via Facebook and the Library’s blog: WML InfoSpot.
Reserves
Required readings are placed on Reserve by faculty. Students may consult a list of Reserves via the Online Public Catalog. Non-Print reserves are in the Media & EDLAB Resources Collection. The length of the loan is determined by the faculty member; hourly Reserves are used in the building; overnight, 3-day and weekly reserves may be signed out. Required readings that are in circulation that are needed for Reserve are subject to immediate recall. The loan period automatically expires and the borrower must return the book immediately.

ERes, Electronic Reserves, are available over the Internet. Access is restricted through the use of a password distributed by the faculty member.

For an item to be placed on reserve, it must comply with copyright restrictions.

Sleeping
Library furniture is intended for reading or studying. While it is understandable that students may doze while studying, Library staff or Public Safety Officers may awaken someone whose sleeping is disruptive to the study of others.  An example of such behavior is snoring loudly in the Quiet Study Room. Sleeping anywhere in the Library by members of the public is not permitted. If a member of the public falls asleep, he or she will be awakened and informed of the policy. If there is a second infraction, Public Safety will be called to escort that person from the building.
Staff Listing
For a complete list of Library administration, faculty and staff, click here.
Theft and Mutilation Policy
Library materials that are not properly charged out will trigger alarms. Textbooks and videotapes from rental sources may also trigger the alarm. For University of Scranton students, if the item that triggered the alarm is owned by the Library, an Incident Report is completed and filed. Incidents involving mutilation of materials are referred to the Student Affairs Office for disciplinary action. The Library reserves the right to revoke the privileges of NPLN, LCLS and other guest borrowers who violate Library policy or damage materials.
Unattended Children
The Weinberg Library’s collections and services are specifically designed to meet the needs of our students, faculty and staff. For this reason, visitors age 14 or under must be accompanied by a responsible adult* while in the building. This includes school students doing research or being tutored as well as children attending any camp held at the University.

Children should never be left unsupervised. Parents, guardians, or teachers are responsible for the appropriate supervision and behavior of any children who accompany them while in the Library. Because the Library is a teaching environment, disruptive children and their supervising adults will be asked to leave.

Library computers are to be used in accordance with the Public Access Computer Policy. Unsupervised access to the Internet by anyone age 14 and under is prohibited as the Library does not utilize filters that would screen out materials that may not be appropriate for persons of that age.

After providing unattended minors age 14 and under with a copy of the policy, Library staff will orally explain both the policy and the actions that must cease. Failure to comply will result in notification to Public Safety for appropriate action.

In instances of disruption or policy violation, the staff member will, upon request of the responding Public Safety Officer, provide a written statement as to the minor’s actions and refusal to comply with the policy as presented and orally reviewed with him/her.

*A responsible adult is defined as a person who is a sibling at least age 18, a parent or legal guardian or is recognized by the University as having supervisory responsibility for the minor (camp counselor, for example).

The history of the University, faculty publications and special collections are housed in the University Archives. These materials are to be used in the University Archives and Special Collections Reading Room on the Fourth Floor. Hours are posted. Appointments are highly recommended.
