State Budget Cuts Felt by Libraries
Despite nearly nine months of intensive lobbying, letter writing, and personal contacts with legislators throughout the state, efforts by the Pennsylvania Library Association, library staff, and patrons failed to convince Governor Rendell to reinstate drastic state cuts to public libraries for 2003.

The Teach Act and Fair Use of Copywrighted Materials
The passage of the TEACH (Technology, Education and Copyright Harmonization) Act of 2002 has been generally welcomed by the academic community as a corrective to the ambiguity of the Copyright Act of 1976 and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998. As written, the law had left libraries and educational institutions liable for copyright infringement if they used the same materials for distance students as for face-to-face students.

Hill-Davis Jesuit Collection Grows
The Hill-Davis Jesuit Collection continues to grow. We recently acquired an early compilation of the rules for the Society of Jesus (Regulae Societas Iesu) and the program for the Jesuits educational system (Ratio Atque Institutio Studiorum)published by the Jesuit press in Rome in 1606-07.

Current and Upcoming Special Collections Exhibits
The exhibit "The University of Scranton: A Century of Impressions" will continue in the Heritage Room through April 18. The exhibit, which has been featured on Television Channel WYOU and in a Scranton Record article, looks at what a Catholic University does and provides images and documents to show how Scranton has fulfilled those functions. > Full story

Library Faculty Teach MIT Course
During the fall semester of 2003 the Library faculty taught E-Research: Information-Seeking Skills and Strategies. This 3-credit course was conducted through the Media and Information Technology department, a cross-disciplinary major. The class concentrated on the use of the Internet for research in a variety of fields, emphasizing online research techniques and effective online search strategies.> Full story

Once again, the Weinberg Memorial Library will celebrate Scholarship Month at The University of Scranton during May 2004 with an exhibition of faculty publications in the Scranton Heritage Room.
