Tables are a powerful feature that utilizes columns and rows to present text in side by side paragraphs for comparison or to arrange text beside graphics. If you use tables, try one of these tips in your next document.
How to:
Reorder Table Rows
- Left click inside the row that you wish to reorder.
- Press and hold the keys [Alt+Shift]. Press the up or down arrow on the keyboard to move the row.
To select multiple rows, hold the mouse button down while dragging over the rows. - Release the mouse and then repeat step (2).
Split an Existing Table
- Click inside the row that will become the first fow of the second table.
- Click the tab "Layout" and then "Split Table" in the "Merge" group.
Display a Heading
If a table extends beyond a page or two, consider displaying the table's header row at the top of each page.
- Click inside the header row(s).
- Click the tab "Layout" and then "Repeat Header Rows" in the "Data" group.
Preventing Orphans
Text orphans are where a single line of text extends past the bottom of the page and onto the next page. A table orphan is similar, text within the a row forces the row to extend onto the next page.
- Click inside the row that carried over to the next page.
- Click the tab "Layout" and then "Properties" in the "Table" group.
- Click the tab "Row" and then uncheck the "Allow Row to Break Across Pag" option.
- Click "Ok".
Quick Numbering
- Select the column that requires numbering, then click "Numbering" on the "Home" tab.
- To number items already in a cell, the items must be seperated by a hard return (press Enter).
- Highlight everything in the cell and then click "Numbering".
