Simple lists that contain personal, school, or item names, etc. are easily sorted in Word. The only requirements are that each list item must be on its own paragraph.

Example 1

  1. Press the "Enter key" after typing each of the three names listed (Donald Duck, John Henry, and Harold Snyder).
  2. Click the "Sort icon" in the Paragraph group on the Home tab.
  3. Choose "Paragraphs" from the "Sort by" drop down menu in the Sort Text dialog box.
  4. From the "Type" drop down choose the appropriate data type "Text" and the order "Ascending".
  5. Click "OK".

Example 2

  1. Reselect the sorted names and then click on the "Sort icon".
  2. Click the button "Options" at the bottom of the Sort Text dialog box.
  3. Change the "Separate fields at" to "Other" and then press the "Spacebar" to add a space.
  4. Click "OK" and then choose Word 2 from the "Sort by" drop down menu.
  5. Choose the data type "Text" and the order "Ascending", then click "OK".

The name are now sorted by the last name.
