New Graduate Students

New Graduate Students: Graduate students new to the University of Scranton have two options for obtaining housing for the Fall semester.

1.) Students may pay the $200 housing deposit and select from the available graduate beds.

There is reserved graduate housing in the Herold House Apartment and Dorothy Day House apartments.

Each apartment available in Dorothy Day House is a two-person or a three-person apartment. Each apartment is assigned to a specific gender and only that gender can live in that apartment. Each apartment is made up of single rooms, 1 common bathroom with a shower, sink, and toilet bowl, 1 common kitchen, and 1 common lounge. The cost to each student for the 2005-2006 Academic Year was $478 per month for a two-person apartment and $457 per month for three-person apartment. This fee generally increases from 3 to 5 percent annually and the 2006-2007 rate has yet to be determined. This fee includes utilities, cable, etc.

The Herold House Apartments offer six 3 person apartments. Each apartment is assigned to a specific gender and only that gender can live in that apartment. Each apartment is made up of single bedrooms, 1 common bathroom with a shower, sink, and toilet bowl, 1 common kitchen, and 1 common lounge. One of the single rooms is noticeably smaller than the other two. The cost to each student for the 2005-06 Academic Year was $457 per month for three-person apartment. This fee generally increases from 3 to 5 percent annually but the 2006-2007 rate has yet to be determined. This fee includes utilities, cable, etc.

For square footage and apartment layout, floor plans are available on the Residence Life website at www.scranton.edu/reslife.

Basic furnishings are provided such as beds, couch, tables, etc. Televisions, computers, phones are not provided.

There are computer hookups in each room. The beds are singles. The graduate students need to clean their own apartments. Maintenance will get the trash and clean the hallways and stairwells. The students themselves need to maintain their own apartments. If there is a problem, then maintenance will fix whatever is broken or not working properly. The Herold House and Dorothy Day House, with the exception of one live-in professional staff member, are completely graduate buildings.

To be eligible students would need to pay $200 deposit to the Bursars Office. It is probably a good idea to include in the check memo that this is the 2006-2007 Housing Deposit or include a brief note with the check so that it is applied to the correct account. This should be sent to the Bursars Office 800 Linden St., Scranton, PA 18510.

When the deposit is paid students will be able to select from the remaining available housing. Housing will be on a first come, first served basis and students will share apartments with others that chose the same apartment. Once all housing is filled, students will need to be placed on a waitlist and will be contacted if and when a graduate housing space becomes available.

It is also important to note that the housing contract for new graduate students for the 2006-2007 Academic Year would run from August 1, 2006 through May 31, 2007 (if students would prefer starting earlier there is a chance of arranging this) and for students planning to stay on campus another year (academic year 2007-2008) then the following years contract would run from June 1, 2007 through May 31, 2008.

Any questions or concerns don't hesitate to ask. The number for the Office of Residence Life is 570 941-6226.

2.) Students may come to the University of Scranton and stay in Leahy Hall for the week of August 14 through August 18 at no charge. Students will be expected to make their own off campus housing arrangements at this time for the Academic Year. The reason for this is because once a student commits to University of Scranton housing he or she is not to be released from the housing contract. The University of Scranton graduate housing may be considered a bit more expensive in comparison to alternative housing options near the University of Scranton campus. The University of Scranton does not sponsor or recommend any non-university owned off campus houses but will allow students this opportunity to make their own housing arrangements. Please note that this is only a temporary assignment in Leahy Hall and it is expected that students will make their own housing arrangements and will move out of Leahy Hall by August 18, 2006. Students will have to sign a temporary housing contract to stay in Leahy Hall from August 14, 2006 through August 18, 2006.

Returning Graduate Students

Returning Graduate Students in Housing:

Options:

Graduate students who are currently on campus and intend to return to campus next year may either participate in the Graduate Assignment Selection Process on March 1, 2006 or inform the Office of Residence Life of your intentions of maintaining the same residency in the Herold House Apartments by February 21, 2006. Regrettably, Elizabeth Ann Seton is not available for returning students in 2006-2007. (see note below)

Process:

In order to return to your current assignment in Herold Apartments, students must contact the Office of Residence Life via email at Res-Life@Scranton.edu by February 21, 2006 with student's name, Building and room number, and desire to return. The $200 housing deposit must also be paid by February 21, 2006.

In order to participate in the Graduate Assignment Selection Process, students are required to pay a $200 housing deposit by March 1, 2006. As a returning graduate student you will be eligible to fill a vacancy in the Herold House or Dorothy Day House Apartments.

Specifics:

The Graduate Room Selection Process will take place at 5:00 PM on March 1, 2006. Students will be able to choose from the available graduate housing based on their eligibility. In choosing an apartment, all rooms will be available and there will be no pull-ins required or allowed. Students will not be required to fill an apartment when choosing but simply choose from an available room. If students are aware of other eligible students that they would like to live with, it is in their best interest to discuss their options before the Graduate Room Selection Process goes live.

Graduate Housing Contracts for returning graduate students run from June 1 through May 31. Graduate students new to the University and arriving in August would not be charged for the housing for the entire year; however, returning students who attempt to find other housing arrangements and then return to University Housing in the Fall semester will be charged for the entire year.

Please Note: The Elizabeth Ann Seton House graduate apartments have been replaced with similar apartment style housing in the Dorothy Day House apartments. Elizabeth Ann Seton House will be entirely undergraduate students and Dorothy Day House, with the exception of one live-in professional staff member, will be entirely graduate students assuming that enough graduate students require housing to fill this building.
