RESEARCH REQUIREMENT FOR PSYCHOLOGY 110

As part of your educational experience in psychology you will be gaining a more in-depth knowledge of the research process than is usually possible from textbook material alone.  This will be accomplished through your participation in two separate activities. The two activities can be any combination of either summaries of research reports or actual participation in research studies.  You may do either two summaries, two research studies or a combination of one summary and one research study.  This is in addition to any other course requirements established by your instructor.  Failure to complete this requirement will result in a reduction of your grade to the next lowest level (e.g., B to B-).

RESEARCH REPORT

If you would prefer not to participate in research being conducted in the department (see below), you may read and summarize two articles based on psychological research which can be found in the library.  Each summary will be a minimum of one page in length, with the actual content and format specified by your instructor.  The type of article and method of locating it will also be described by your instructor.  Your instructor will inform you when this paper is due.

RESEARCH PARTICIPATION

Psychological studies are conducted each year by department faculty or upper class psychology majors supervised by the faculty. (You Must Be At Least 17 Years Old To Participate In A Study.)  If you would prefer to participate in the departmental research, please fill in the appropriate information on the attached sheet.  An individual research study will probably involve up to an hour of your time and, in some cases, may require more than one session.

Such participation will not only familiarize you with the actual mechanics of research you will be reading about during the semester, but will also provide you with a better understanding of research methods and of psychological content.  Under typical circumstances, the informed consent form will sufficiently inform you of the purposes and methods of the study.  However, before you decide to participate in the study and sign the informed consent form, you can ask the investigator any questions you may have about the research.

If you agree to participate in research, then you can sign up at the research requirement bulletin board in the Psychology Department hallway or you will be contacted by phone or post card regarding the time of the research.  If you are unable to participate at that time or do not wish to participate, you must let the investigator know in advance.

***       If you fail to notify the researcher in advance and miss your scheduled time, your requirement will be increased.  In this case, you must complete an additional assignment (for a total of three studies, three summaries, or a combination of studies and/or summaries totaling three) to make up for a missed research appointment.  Unusual circumstances will be taken into account; please bring these to the attention of the investigator conducting the study.

After reporting for the research study, you may discontinue your participation at any point during the research and still have fulfilled your requirement.  Any questions, comments, or complaints regarding your research participation should be directed to your instructor or to Dr. James Buchanan, psychology chairperson (941-4267) or at (buchananj1@scranton.edu).

Unfortunately, only a limited number of studies are conducted each semester, so not everyone who wishes to participate in research may be able to do so.  Therefore, if you desire to participate but have not signed up for two studies or have not been contacted by the end of the semester, you must write and submit the paper/s described above to meet the two-activity requirement.  Your instructor will announce this cut-off date in class.
