Planning, Assessment & Institutional Research Office

Planning at the University of Scranton is guided by two critical documents:

The University of Scranton
Strategic Plan 2005-2010

Pride, Passion, Promise: Shaping our Jesuit Tradition

In fall 2005, the University unveiled its strategic plan for 2005-2010. As described by the University's Planning & Institutional Effectiveness Model, the plan will seek to fulfill the mission, vision, and goals of the institution through a series of themes and strategies.

The Process

During the 2003-2004 academic year, the University Planning Committee, with the support of the Planning, Assessment, & Institutional Research office, engaged in formal, detailed issue analysis through review of internal reports and information along with rigorous environmental scanning. To view these scans and other reports, click here.

In November of 2004, members of the University community engaged in a situation analysis of internal strengths and weaknesses and external opportunities and threats. The results of these activities informed the process of discerning themes and strategies for the 2005-2010 plan. Outcomes from Planning Day can be viewed by clicking here.

During the spring 2005 semester, the University Planning Committee shared draft themes & strategies with the University community. Feedback to these drafts was solicited, and informed the development and refinement of the themes & strategies. To view a presentation of the draft themes, click here.

The Result

On May 4, 2005, the University's Board of Trustees approved a final draft of themes & strategies put forward by the University Planning Committee. These themes & strategies form the heart of the Strategic Plan document. To view the themes and strategies approved by the Board, click here.

Following the release of the plan, the University engaged in the development of eleven tactical plans. These tactical plans flesh out the mid-level planning that is described in the institution's planning & institutional effectiveness model. They provide a venue for each administrative area of the University, along with several functional areas, to explore ways in which they can support the themes and strategies of the strategic plan. These tactical plans specify ways the University can link the results of assessment practices and processes to the ways it plans operationally, tactically, and strategically. Information about the tactical planning process is described in the University's Guide for Tactical Planners.

The tactical planning areas of the University are: Academic Affairs, Administrative Services, Finance, Information Resources, Institutional Advancement, Student Affairs, University Ministries, Diversity, Enrollment Management, Human Resources, and Marketing.
