THE
UNIVERSITY & THE COMMUNITY THEME
The University of
Scranton will continue to use its expertise and resources to meet the critical
needs of the region it calls home. The University also will continue to
recognize and utilize the strengths and the resources that the region affords
to its educational mission. As a Jesuit institution, the University embraces
its obligation to educate its students in civic responsibility.

I.

Goal
The University will be proactive
in its efforts to foster the economic and social well-being of its
neighborhood, the City of Scranton, and all of Northeastern Pennsylvania.
Objectives
- Strengthen the Universitys commitment to the
continued economic development of the area. See Enrollment Management
Goal III, Objective C.
- The efforts will continue to focus on: (1)
educational and cultural collaboration, (2) voluntary community service by
students, staff and faculty, and (3) the provision of professional services
that enhance the welfare of the region. See Enrollment Management
Goal III Objective C; The Environment for Learning Goal IV, Objective C; and
The Service of Faith and the Promotion of Justice Goal V, Objective B.
- Ensure that these efforts permeate all divisions of
the institution.
- Coordinate the work of the Center for Public
Initiatives with other divisions of the institution. See Enrollment
Management Goal I, Objective E1.
- Continue to serve the educational needs of the
community by recruiting local students and by providing other programs to the
people of the area. See Enrollment Management Goal IA, Objectives 3
and 4.

Goal
The University will encourage reflection as an
integral part of its outreach and its service activities. This reflection will
be encouraged of individuals, of communities, and the institution as a whole.

Objectives
- Clarify what is meant by the term "community
service." In particular, the relationship between
"service-learning" for students and "community service"
will be clarified. See Faculty Goal IV , Objectives B and C; The
Environment for Learning Goal IV, Objective C; and The Service of Faith and the
Promotion of Justice Goal V, Objective A.
- Develop in our students a commitment to be
thoughtful and productive contributors to the communities in which they live
and work. See The Service of Faith and the Promotion of Justice Goal
V, Objective A.
- Foster a consistent and open dialogue between
students and the Hill Section community in an effort to promote an atmosphere
of mutual respect.

Goal
The University will continue to utilize the many
resources of the region to further enhance its educational mission.

Objectives
- The University will increase its utilization of the
rich natural and cultural resources of the region to enhance the educational
and scholarly experiences of its students and faculty.
- The University will increase its utilization of the
rich social, cultural, and business resources of the region to enhance the
internship, practicum, and co-curricular experiences of its students.
