THE ENVIRONMENT FOR LEARNING THEME

As a manifestation of its care for the whole person (cura personalis), the University will create an environment that supports the development of its students and that fosters in its students habits of excellence in learning and in living.

Strategic Goals and Objectives

I.

Goal

The University will continue to nurture its students encouraging them both to discover their talents and to realize fully their potential in learning and in life. SeeFaculty Goal II,
Objective A.

Objectives

  1. Assess better the attitudes and aspirations of students as they enter the University and at various points in their academic careers. SeeFaculty Goal III, Objectives A and B.
  2. Share the assessment results of Goal I, Objective A with members of the University community in order to increase their understanding of the attitudes and aspirations of students. SeeFaculty Goal III, Objective B.
  3. Strengthen current and develop new opportunities and programs that build on assessment data and that engage various segments of the University community to assist students in discovering talents and realizing fully their potential in learning and living. SeeFaculty, Goal II, Objective E and Goal III, Objective B; and The Service of Faith and the Promotion of Justice Goal V, Objective A.
  4. Strengthen the support and guidance provided to students as they choose and pursue fields of study in support of career, advanced degree or service goals. SeeFaculty Goal II, Objective E.
  5. Develop further academic and co-curricular programs to encourage students to enhance leadership skills.
  6. Strengthen the University’s commitment to athletics as an element of the collegiate experience, and develop strategies to guide the continued improvement and enhancement of both intercollegiate and recreational athletics. SeeFinancial Responsibility Goal III, Objective B; Enrollment Management Goal I, Objective A2; and The Service of Faith and the Promotion of Justice Goal V, Objective A.
  7. Implement a process to identify better and celebrate the achievements of students in all facets of their lives at the University. SeePublic Image Goal I, Objective B.
 

II.

Goal

In its attempts to build a healthy community, the University will address obstacles to student growth and development, especially the effects of alcohol and drug abuse.

Objectives

  1. Identify and assess obstacles to student growth and development both inside and out of the classroom. SeeEnrollment Management Goal IV, Objective A and Faculty Goal II, Objective A.
  2. Share assessment results from Goal II, Objective B with faculty, staff and students to increase awareness of warning signs in the lives of students and of the resources available to assist students in need. SeeEnrollment Management Goal IV, Objective A and Diversity & Globalization Goal II, Objective B.
  3. Develop and implement strategies that engage all segments of the University to reduce student abuse of alcohol and other drugs.
 

III.

Goal

The University will encourage and assist faculty and staff to become even more involved in the lives of students as mentors and as partners in research and service.

Objectives

  1. Strengthen and expand programs that are based on faculty-student interaction, such as the Faculty-Student Research Program. SeeFaculty Goal II, Objectives A and D.
  2. Support ongoing and encourage new "learning communities" – formal and informal activities and interactions centered, for example, on disciplines, programs or areas of research interest. SeeFaculty Goal II, Objectives A and E.
 

IV.

Goal

The University will support existing and create additional opportunities for students to integrate learning and living.

Objectives

  1. Better coordinate programs to assist students in their first year, especially Orientation, the Gateway program and the Freshman Seminar, and encourage the creation of living/learning programs for all incoming students. SeeFaculty Goal III, Objectives A and B.
  2. Examine the goals and objectives of the General Education Curriculum and academic majors and programs to determine what co-curricular and extra-curricular experiences can be integrated with them. SeeFaculty Goal III, Objective A.
  3. Encourage service learning with reflection throughout all colleges and schools. SeeThe Service of Faith and the Promotion of Justice Goal V, Objective B and The University and the Community Goal I, Objective B, Objective B and Goal II, Objective A.
  4. Provide more students with opportunities for integrated learning experiences similar to that found in Gavigan College or theme houses.
  5. Strengthen the "Commuter-in-Residence" experience to incorporate more direct faculty and staff involvement and more support for all participating students. SeeFaculty Goal II, Objective E.
  6. Understand and address more fully the overall needs of graduate and Dexter Hanley College students.

V.

Goal

The University will implement a cohesive system of advising that effectively assists students throughout their academic career. See Enrollment Management Goal IV, Objective C. and Faculty Goal II, Objective E.

Objectives

  1. Evaluate the present systems of academic advising in use by the University’s colleges and schools. See Enrollment Management Goal IV, Objective C. and Faculty Goal II, Objective E and Goal III, Objective B..
  2. Design a University-wide advising system that is sensitive to individual distinctions within colleges and schools but that provides a cohesive approach to student advising. See Enrollment Management Goal IV, Objective C. and Faculty Goal II, Objective E.
  3. Implement and evaluate a University-wide advising system. See Enrollment Management Goal IV, Objective C. and Faculty Goal II, Objective E and Goal III, Objective B.

VI.

Goal

The University will develop and implement a course scheduling system that better supports student educational needs.

Objectives

  1. Project course offerings out for two years and devise a scheduling system that will:
    1. Reduce the number of courses that are cancelled due to low enrollment.
    2. Evaluate and identify the appropriate number of evening courses across colleges and schools.

      See Faculty Goal V, Objective B.

  2. Implement the two-year scheduling system.
  3. Develop a system for tracking and assessing progress to aid students in planning their academic careers.
