DIVERSITY & GLOBALIZATION THEME

In fulfillment of its mission as a Catholic and Jesuit institution, The University of Scranton will create a fully integrated campus environment that is marked by ethnic and racial diversity and that actively fosters within its students, faculty and staff an understanding of and respect for issues of gender and for cultures other than their own.

Strategic Goals and Objectives

I.

Goal

A Welcoming Community: The University will increase its initiatives to heighten the awareness, appreciation and sensitivity of faculty, staff, and students to issues of gender and to cultures other than their own.

Objectives

  1. Expand diversity and gender awareness and training programs for faculty, staff, and students. See Financial Responsibility Goal V, Objective C.
  2. Identify opportunities to acknowledge and to celebrate diverse cultures.
  3. Develop academic and co-curricular programs to foster an understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures.
     
    1. Continue to provide faculty development opportunities that will lead to curricular initiatives to meet diversity goals.
    2. Expand opportunities outside the classroom for students to increase their understanding of cultures other than their own, both in the setting of the United States and in the world.
 

II.

Goal

A Richly Diverse Community: The University commits itself to the recruitment of a faculty, staff and student body that is ethnically and racially diverse, so as to more accurately reflect the world in which its students will live and work. See The Service of Faith and the Promotion of Justice Goal VI, Objective A.

Objectives

  1. Develop and implement plans to recruit diverse faculty, staff and students. See Enrollment Management Goal I, Objective A5.
  2. Better coordinate and expand support mechanisms to assist in the retention of diverse students, faculty and staff. See Enrollment Management Goal IVA, and Environment for Learning Goal II, Objective B.
 

III.

Goal

A Commitment to Global Education: The University will develop a comprehensive approach to global education, including internationally oriented programs, foreign study programs, and the recruitment and retention of international students and faculty.

Objectives

  1. Establish a mechanism to coordinate international activities across divisional lines to ensure the broad awareness and accessibility of such programs.
  2. Develop and implement a comprehensive international recruitment and retention program for faculty and students. See Enrollment Management Goal I Objective A3.
  3. Continue to develop and foster foreign study programs for students as well as international exchange programs and international service projects for faculty, staff and students.
