Student Research Opportunities

Students at the University of Scranton learn outside of the classroom, as well as inside.  A significant part of the educational experience can occur through the "hands-on" inquiry that takes place by participating in research and other creative projects with faculty mentors through the Faculty/Student Research Program.  Other times the research and intellectual inquiry occur primarily at the initiative of the student through upper-level research courses that are part of the major, or as the result of being involved in the Honors Program.  However it is accomplished, the research process broadens and deepens the educational experience substantially.

In addition to supporting faculty research efforts, the Office of Research Services (ORS) endeavors to support student research activities.  In early May of each year we sponsor the Annual Celebration of Student Scholars.  This day features displays of the outcomes of student research efforts, as well as a reception at which we celebrate these accomplishments.  Along with such internal activities, we encourage our students to participate in external research conferences.  Over the years, a number of University of Scranton students have attended and presented posters or papers at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR), and many have presented papers with faculty members at regional and national professional conferences.  ORS has some funds available for students to help offset the costs of attendance at such conferences.

Student research activities occur during the academic year and during the summer.  Individual faculty and students can apply for internal summer support through the President's Fellowship for Summer Research.   We also encourage students to investigate external funding sources for summer research support and to utilize travel funds for conferences.
