Article below is about my internship class of CIGNA's AEDP. I think the best way to learn about a job is to have an internship. An AEDP intern. What comes to mind? Potential? Enthusiasm? Fun? CIGNA's future? Less work for the full-timers? In any case, this summer's class of AEDP interns has tried their best to possess these qualities, and to also have a great time along the way. From the work place to social experiences, the AEDP interns have experienced many great activities to make the summer a fantastic one, albeit a busy one as well. Socially, there are many activities that brought the interns together with the full timers. Bowling, second only to horseshoes for required athletic ability, was high on the list of favorite activities. With not-so-friendly competitions between amigo/intern couples and bets on who can score the most gutter balls (that was the bet, right?), AEDPers had some great times. Paintball was another social experience that brought everyone together. It also served as a great stress reliever by taking out our aggression in a semi-safe environment. With only a few cuts, scrapes, and bruises, paintball allowed everyone to have a good time. The 10th of July was the voyage to northern Massachusetts for white water rafting. Despite the 7:00 am meeting time, everyone seemed to enjoy the rapids, water fights (by the way, the undisputable winner was 'Amy the Guide's Boat'), water games, and end-of-the-day slide show. Unfortunately, more interns fell out of the boats than full-timers, but that is because they are obviously much more adventuresome. Believe it or not, the interns have been able to have fun without the full-timers around. Getaways to Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New York have allowed the interns to get to know each other really well (sometimes even a little too well). Also, the infamous 'University of Hartford Painting the Anchor Rebellion' was another social highlight of the summer. The 'Holiday in July' Intern Party proved to be another great experience. At work, AEDP interns have experienced a good mix of working on individual projects, the speaker series, lunches with senior management, and interaction with many talented full-timers who are more than willing to get a break from their regular routines to help the interns out. Another work experience that the interns are sure to remember, but not necessarily think of highly, was the group (beginning of the summer) and individual (end of the summer) presentations, which forced the interns to sound like they knew what they are doing. As the summer progressed, AEDP interns have evolved from bashing their foreheads against the computer screen out of frustration to actually adding value to CIGNA's many lines of business. Indeed, an AEDP intern's summer experience is definitely an excellent adventure. Socially, from the first week of nervousness and anxiety, to the last few weeks of friendship and great memories, an AEDP intern has experienced many great times. And at work, from the first week of frustration and taking a bad picture on the CIGNA ID, to the last few weeks of completing a beneficial project and increased knowledge of actuarial work, an AEDP intern has had many opportunities to grow as an actuary. All in all, CIGNA's AEDP internship program has provided interns a broad base of experience to make their summers a memorable one.
