Mission:

To promote globalization of the health and rehabilitation through:

  • Advocacy
  • Collaboration
  • Credentialing
  • Research
  • Scholarship
  • Training

within a context of a Jesuit University committed to social justice and service to the poor of the world.

Goals:

  1. 1. Promote theoretical and applied scholarship on global health and rehabilitation.
  2. Provide training opportunities for the academic, business, governmental, non-governmental, and professional communities.
  3. Internationalize the curricula within the Panuska College of Professional Studies.
  4. Provide a forum for developing interdisciplinary international initiatives involving faculty, administrators, staff, and students.
  5. Attract international scholars, researchers, and practitioners to the Panuska College of Professional Studies.
  6. Develop academic affiliations with universities and governmental/ nongovernmental organizations.
  7. Develop entrepreneurial business initiatives with universities and governmental/ nongovernmental organizations.
  8. Create a clearinghouse for activities associated with globalization of health and rehabilitation.
  9. Become a national and international focal point for globalization of health and rehabilitation.
  10. Sponsor conferences to facilitate communication within relevant professions.

Rationale:

The College of Professional Studies has assumed a central role in the globalization of health and rehabilitation through its sustained track record in diverse settings and countries around the world. The proposed Center for Global Health and Rehabilitation will provide synergistic coordination to ensure that the College of Professional Studies remains at the forefront of globalization efforts. While thoroughly grounded within the Jesuit mission of the University of Scranton, the Center will also seek to develop and support global entrepreneurship as related to the College of Professional Studies' and University's strategic plan. Meeting the health and rehabilitation needs of poor individuals, families, and communities worldwide demand creative program planning and trained professionals with needed resources. Procuring needed resources lies at the heart of program implementation and sustainability. The Center intends to foster an entrepreneurial spirit that can ensure mission fulfillment.

Operational Objectives

  1. Appoint co-directors of the center
  2. Develop a PCPS interdisciplinary committee to serve as advisors
  3. Secure agreements with outside resources (e.g., WHO, USAID, World Bank) to work with the Center
  4. Develop a functional and practical business plan for the Center (2 to 5 year plan)
  5. Secure external funding to support the work of the Center
  6. Initiate micro-financing of projects within PCPS to develop faculty expertise
  7. Executive Affiliation Agreements and Memorandum of Understanding with universities and governmental/ nongovernmental organizations in other countries
  8. Design and prioritize global regional networks
  9. Initiate specific projects with a high probability of success
