Master's Degree in
History
The History Program is designed
to prepare individuals either for further study (e.g. admission to Ph.D.
programs, law schools , etc.), enrichment, or for entry into careers in
museums, libraries, and research institutions. Many elementary and secondary
school teachers also pursue this program to enhance their professional
credentials and teaching expertise.
Admissions
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree
with 18 upper-division credits in the desired area of study
- 2.75 GPA (4.0 scale)
- TOEFL score of 550 for International students
- GRE scores may be required for some applicants

- All graduate and undergraduate transcripts
- Three letters of recommendation
History
Program
The Master of Arts in History requires 30 graduate credits. This may be
completed by 30 credits of course work (non-thesis option) or by 24-credits of
course work plus 6 credits of thesis work (thesis option). All students must
pass a comprehensive examination.
Combined Bachelor's/Master's Degree
Programs
History majors at the University of Scranton can obtain both the bachelor's and
the master's degree within four calendar years. This special program requires
students to take classes during Intersession and Summer Session.
Admission to this program is contingent on approvals from the History
department, the Graduate School (an application must be submitted), and the
College of Arts and Sciences. Students ordinarily apply for the History program
during their Sophomore year.
To apply to the History program, the student must have obtained a 3.2 GPA (4.0
scale). This average must be maintained throughout the program.
Of course, students enrolled in this program are still required to complete all
other degree requirements specified by the College of Arts and Sciences and The
Graduate School as specified in their catalogs.
Scheduling
Courses are offered from 4:30-7:10 p.m. and 7:20-10:00 p.m. Monday through
Thursday. Each course meets one night per week in the Fall and Spring
Semesters. Ordinarily, the degree must be completed within six consecutive
years. Applicants may start courses in September, January, or
February.
