A Message from the Dean

With its elevation to collegiate status, the College of Graduate and Continuing Education assumes the responsibilities of an academic college, emphasizes the role of the non-traditional student in the University of Scranton's academic mission, assists the University in the attainment of its Strategic Plan, creates greater visibility and clarity regarding the role of graduate education by enhancing the institution's competitiveness in graduate education, facilitates the development of innovative undergraduate credit opportunities for non-residential students by providing them with multiple points of access and egress, and works to meet the ever changing training and educational needs of the community while embracing the University's commitment to Life Long Learning. In particular:

  • Graduate students and graduate programs have a Dean at the academic leadership table representing them in institutional planning and advocating for support of graduate education. As such, the College of Graduate and Continuing Education serves as an advocate for the intellectual development of graduate students, establishes policies that define good practice in graduate programs, provides academic-support services for graduate students, and has academic authority and responsibility for the integrity of all graduate degrees;
  • Non-traditional, non-residential, undergraduate students have a Dean that provides voice and support to the unique needs of this population of students. As such, the College of Graduate and Continuing Education provides comprehensive student services for non-traditional students from admission to graduation, collaborates with faculty in other academic colleges to promote programs that embrace adult learning theory strategies, monitors the academic progress of non-traditional students, and has academic authority and responsibility for all undergraduate certificate programs, all associate degrees and programs, and designated bachelor degree programs; and,
  • Area employers and employees have a Center that provides education and training designed to assist Northeast Pennsylvania in the retraining and expansion of its workforce. Through the Center for Professional Development and Training, the University works with area businesses and industries to assist with the retention of existing employees and the attraction of new employers to the area by building programs that address emerging needs and changing trends. This is accomplished through academic, for-credit, educational courses and non-credit, continuing education, training programs.
