Create Your Web Directory

Each student at the university can create web pages and host them on the Academic Server (academic.scranton.edu). To do this, each student must first use a program called PuTTY to create a web directory on this server. This tutorial will show you how to set up your web directory on the Academic Server.

Some Notes Before You Begin

  • PuTTY will close if you fail to enter the correct password after 3 tries. If you have problems with your password, call the Technology Support Center at x4357 (HELP).
  • If you have already created web space on the Academic Server (for a previous course, e.g., C/IL) you do not have to go through this setup.

Creating your Web Directory

  1. From Windows Start Menu > Programs, select PuTTY to start the program.

  2. Enter academic.scranton.edu for the “Host Name (or IP address)”.
  3. Set the Connection type to SSH.
  4. Click Open and you will be asked for your username and password.
  5. Enter your username which is your e-mail address (e.g., smithj1).
  6. Enter your password, if it's your 1st time logging into the Academic server, your password will be the last 6 digits of your Social Security Number.
Note: As you type your password, it will not appear on the screen. It is set up to do this for security purposes.
  7. Next, you may be prompted to change your password. Type in your current password, a new password and then type the new password again for verification purposes.
  8. Once you have logged in successfully, you will come to a $ prompt. At the $ prompt, enter WEBPAGE
  9. At the “Create only the directory” prompt, type YES and press Enter.
Note: This will create a directory NY:[WEBPAGE.STUDENT.USERNAME]. You will need this when you are ready to ftp your files.
  10. At the next $ prompt, type SETUP_LOGIN. A menu of commands will appear on the screen.
  11. Type WEBFTP and press Enter. This will make the default directory point to your web directory.
  12. Logout of the Academic Server by typing LO.

Now that you've created your web directory, you are ready to begin creating web pages with Nvu.
