Creating Student Web Pages

In this tutorial, you will learn how to create your space on the Academic Web Server, create web pages using Microsoft FrontPage, and upload your files to your web space. Each student at the University of Scranton can create a personal website and host them on the University's Academic Server (academic.scranton.edu). Each student is allocated .5MB of space for their website. The following steps are necessary to create your personal website:

Create Your Web Directory

Students only need to create a directory one time in their time at the University. If you have already created your personal space on the Academic Server, you can skip this step. This part of the tutorial will show you how to:

  • Use a program called PowerTerm Telnet to connect to the Academic Server (academic.scranton.edu).
  • Run a program called WEBPAGE to create a web directory for you on this server.
  • Run a program called SETUP_LOGIN to add a line to your login.com file so that all your files go into your web directory rather than the root directory.

Create Your Web Pages

Learn how to use Microsoft FrontPage (a popular HTML editor) to create your web page(s).

Upload Your Files

Transfer your web page(s) to the Academic Server by using a program called PowerTerm FTP. You must create your web directory before you can upload your files.

Access Your Page

Once you have created your web space, created your web pages, and uploaded them to your directory, you can access your website. Using a web browser such as IE or Mozilla Firefox, type in the following address:

http://academic.scranton.edu/student/username/

Substitute "username" with your student user name.
