CENTER FOR TEACHING & LEARNING EXCELLENCE
TACTICAL PLAN: 2005-2008
The University of Scranton’s Center for Teaching & Learning
Excellence (CTLE) encourages and supports a strong culture of teaching,
learning and scholarship in the Ignatian Tradition for a diverse university
community. In collaboration with the Library, the CTLE works with faculty
and students to help create an environment that encourages and supports
student learning, faculty enrichment, instructional design, and the
pedagogical application of technology. The CTLE provides opportunities
for faculty and students to work together to achieve academic success
and have a positive learning experience at the University. The Mission
of the CTLE is advanced by the following tactical goals.
Priority: A Comprehensive Resource Center/Coordination Center to Support
Teaching and Learning.
Tactical Goals:
1. The CTLE will provide a comprehensive resource center to support
student learning, faculty enrichment, instructional design and the use
of technology.
Actions:
-
Provide
services to support traditional and non-traditional student learning.
-
Encourage
and support faculty to use new pedagogical techniques.
-
Continue
to communicate through internal and external publications about
the CTLE mission, programs, and services.
-
Continue
to develop and assess new programs and services for peer tutoring,
reading enrichment, and
writing consultation
for traditional and nontraditional students.
-
Engage
in grant writing and other forms of resource management to initiate
new CTLE programs.
-
Expand
writing center services to include online writing consultation.
-
Provide
and assess service for students experiencing reading difficulties.
-
Provide
and assess services for students admitted under the Academic Development
Program.
-
Continue
to offer instructional technology support and education for faculty
and students, including
the integration into teaching and learning.
-
Collaborate
with faculty in the development and implementation of online/distance
education courses
and
programs.
-
Promote
services of instructional curriculum design to faculty.
-
Expand
CTLE Web site to include pedagogical resources for faculty.
-
Expand
CTLE Web site to include online tutorials for students to enhance their
study
skills.
-
Expand
CTLE Web site to include online tutorials for faculty and students
related
to instructional technology, such as Blackboard Web Course Management System.

Provide
support to faculty to help them integrate Information Literacy
into their teaching.

Encourage
and support interdisciplinary conversations and collegial exchanges
about teaching and learning among all members of the University community.

Encourage
and support faculty and students to integrate diversity into
their teaching, mentoring, and learning activities.
2. The CTLE will serve as the coordination center for the teaching and
learning needs of students and faculty.
Actions:
-
Implement
the Online Course Evaluation System and train
appropriate backup staff.
-
Continue
to work with the CTLE Advisory Group to expand the role of the
CTLE as the coordination center for the University
in the area of teaching and learning excellence.
-
Continue
to develop relationships and collaboration with faculty, staff, and
students to promote the
services and
programs offered by the CTLE.
-
Acquire
pedagogical resources for CTLE library for faculty.
-
Assist
faculty with the development of tools to assess student learning.
-
Provide
assessment of student learning needs such as reading skills, writing
skills, study skills,
organization skills, learning strategies, and technology skills.
-
Provide
support for faculty teaching and learning through mentoring, individual
consultations,
pedagogical workshops, seminars, and CTLE Teaching Library.
-
Coordinate
support for student learning through the CTLE Peer-Tutoring Program,
Reading
Enrichment
Center, and Writing Enrichment Center.
-
Monitor
and evaluate students’ academic
progress and achievements
through the CTLE Peer-Tutoring Program, Reading Enrichment Center,
and Writing Center.
Priority: Support for Research and Scholarly Activities
Tactical Goal:
1. The CTLE will provide support for non-funded research and scholarly
activity for faculty and students.
Actions:
-
Continue
to work with the Office of Research Services
to develop a faculty-to-faculty mentoring program to assist faculty
with research/scholarly activities
including research design, statistical analysis,
and
manuscript review.

Continue
to provide collaborative or consultative teaching mentoring opportunities
for faculty.
-
Continue
to provide resources to support faculty research and scholarly activities.
-
Continue
to provide support for faculty to include students in their teaching
and research activities.
Priority:
Teaching Excellence and Innovation
Tactical Goal:
1. The CTLE will advocate and recognize teaching excellence and innovation.
Actions:
-
Continue
to support The Teacher of the Year Award, the
Provost’s
Part-time Faculty Award for Teaching
Excellence, and the CASE Professor of the Year Award.
-
Partner
with faculty to implement their web course development grants.
Priority: Support of Academic Accommodations for Student with Disabilities
Tactical Goal:
1. The CTLE will support academic accommodations for students with disabilities
(i.e., Office of Equity and Diversity, Weinberg Library, Counseling Center
and Academic Advisement).
Actions:
-
Continue
to expand services for students with disabilities
including offering workshops and tutorials on learning
strategies and study skill development.

Continue
to obtain assistive technology to assist students with disabilities
when appropriate.
-
Provide
services for students with disabilities including referral for assessment
and
the implementation
of recommendations. These services are coordinated with the University’s
Office of Equity & Diversity
and the University Counseling
Center.

Continue
to collaborate with academic departments, faculty, staff in the Weinberg
Memorial Library,
Counseling Center, Academic Advisement Offices, Student Affairs, and the
Office of Equity
and Diversity
to coordinate services for students
with disabilities.
Priority:
Empowerment of Faculty in the Use of Instructional Technology
for the Ultimate Goal of Student Learning.
Tactical Goals:
1. The CTLE will raise awareness of Instructional Technology among faculty
and highlight best practices.
Actions:
-
Promote
Instructional Technology by attending Dean’s
conferences and showcasing the pedagogical
uses of technology in teaching and
learning.
-
Increase
awareness of IT by attending departmental meetings and having
faculty demonstrate for their
colleagues how they use technology to enhance their curriculum.
2. The CTLE will provide training opportunities for faculty who are interested
in incorporating Instructional Technology into their curriculum.
Actions:
-
Initiating
a Technology Faculty Summer Institute that
helps faculty apply the capacities of technology to teaching and
learning.
-
Continue
offering training, workshops and one-on-one consultations to assist faculty
with using
course management software, web instruction and presentation software.
3. The CTLE will continue to provide educational opportunities from
practitioners in the higher education field who will present novel uses
of technology in the curriculum.
