The University of Scranton
has been blessed with the leadership and vision of Rev. J.A. Panuska, S.J.,
since 1982. Over that time, Father Panuska has become beloved not only by those
students he has touched during his presidency but also by a remarkable number
of graduates from earlier days. During his unprecedented tenure, he has guided
the University through the most significant growth in its history in academic
programs, in capital expansion and in its stature among institutions in the
northeast and, indeed, the nation. Father Panuska's name should be commemorated
along with those of others whose leadership and dedication have shaped the past
and future of the University.
The Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees, therefore, unanimously and
enthusiastically endorses the proposal put forward by the vice presidents of
the University that the College of Health, Education, and Human Resources be
renamed in honor of Father Panuska. We believe this to be eminently appropriate
for the reasons described here:
-
The College is the youngest
of the University's academic entities. It was established in 1987 under Father
Panuska's leadership, and is our fastest-growing college both in enrollment and
in the inauguration of successful new academic programs. Panuska college would
contain departments in education and the health sciences, a reflection of
Father Panuska's career as an educator and a scientist.
-
The recent linkages between
the College's Health Administration Program and institutions in Slovakia were
established through his personal efforts on their behalf.
-
Many of the College's
departments are subject to external accreditation, a factor that assures
continuing adherence to Father's insistence on academeic rigor and excellence
at both the faculty and student levels.
-
The College has instituted a
service learning requirement for its students that embraces a theme in Jesuit
education that is central to the President's work at the University --
educating men and women for others.
It is entirely appropriate
that Father Panuska should be honored along with other Jesuit presidents by
having his name permanently associated with a major academic unit of the
University he has served so faithfully and so well.
A RESOLUTION
Resolved, that the Board of
Trustees of the University of Scranton, in recognition of the vision,
leadership and service of Rev. J.A. Panuska, S.J., directs that the College of
Health, Education and Human Resources be renamed in his honor.
Adopted unanimously by the Trustees of the University, April 9,
1997.
