Chemistry-Business

It comes as a surprise to most people that fully one third of American industries are chemically oriented. Some obvious ones are pure chemicals, pharmaceuticals, heavy metals (steel, aluminum) and plastics. Less obvious examples are dyes, food additives paper and rubber. Traditionally, executives of such companies have come from the ranks of the business major graduates. They have had to work on their own time to pick up, not only, an understanding of what is being done in the plant, but also the fundamental vocabulary needed to talk intelligently with the technical people and their fellow executives. Recently, schools like the University of Scranton have been offering these corporations graduates with a tremendous advantage: not only the fundamental training in management needed to function in their offices but also a basic grounding in the chemical principles upon which the industry is built. From the first date of employment, such a graduate can grasp the processes involved in the plant's operation, deal intelligently with technical people within and outside the company, and make a better and quicker contribution to the running of the enterprise. Chemistry/Business graduates are specialized experts who are in great demand to our many chemically oriented industries. The Chemistry/Business program at the University of Scranton is administered jointly by Chemistry Department and the School of Management. It is not simply a double major, but a well-integrated course of studies intended to prepare the student for a specific type of career.

The following is the grid for the Chemistry-Business major at the University of Scranton. It is only what is recommended for when the student takes certain courses but is not the final decision for the course work, especially if the student advances out of General and Analytical Chemistry I by the exemption test given during the Summer Pre-Orientation.
