Choosing or Changing a Major

Choosing a major is one of the most important decisions a college student will make. Each major has particular requirements of courses that must be taken, and often has expectations on when particular courses should be taken. The choice of a major shapes which courses a student should schedule each semester.

  • Some students know exactly what career they want to pursue and what academic program will best help them prepare for it. These students will usually have declared a major as part of the admissions process or orientation program.

  • Often students have a general i dea of what they want to do, but they have not yet narrowed their career options to a specific field.

  • Other students are really unsure what they want to study or do in the future. All of the "undecided" students will be placed in the CAS Core Curriculum, which will offer them the opportunity to explore several different areas.

  • Students commonly declare a major when applying to the University, but then change their minds within the first year.

Students who are undecided about their major should gather as much information as they can from the following procedures, and then consult with an advisor in the Academic Advising Center as soon as possible. It will be very helpful if students complete these steps before coming in to schedule their Spring Semester classes.
