General Education Information

The current general education requirements were established under Curriculum 2000.

A summary is as follows:

  • 10 credits of Basic Skills are needed.

    1. COMM 100 (Public Speaking)
    2. WRTG 107 ( Composition)
Students in the ADP program will take WRTG 105 and 106 instead of 107
Students in SJLA program will take PHIL 217 in their sophomore year instead of WRTG 107.
    3. C/IL 102 and 102L (Computer Literacy)
C/IL 104 may substitute, if the student has already taken the class.
Students must receive a C or better in the courses listed above or repeat them. There are also exemption exams for these skill courses but they must be completed before the junior year. If students pass the exemption exam they will get a waiver on the requirement, but they must make up the credits to graduate with 130 credits.
    4. INTD 100 (Freshman Seminar)
Transfer students may not be required to take INTD 100, but will need to take an extra PHED course to graduate with 130 credits
  • All students must take 12 specified credits of introductory Philosophy and Theology courses.

    1. PHIL 120 (Introduction to Philosophy)
    2. PHIL 210 (Ethics; Phil 120 is prerequisite)
    3. T/RS 121 (Theology I)
    4. T/RS 122 (Theology II; T/RS 121 is prerequisite)

Both courses in Philosophy must me taken as prerequisites for upper level Philosophy electives. Likewise, both T/RS courses must be taken as prerequisites for upper level T/RS electives.

  • Classes that satisfy the general education requirements are coded. Unless the major requires a specific course as a general education requirement, the student must satisfy the requirement with a course that has been approved for general education. The codes are as follows:

    1.

    (E)

    -

Natural Science - 6 credits needed

    2.

    (S)

    -

    Social/Behavior Science - 6 credits needed

    3.

    (Q)

    -

Quantitative Reasoning - 3 credits needed

    4.

    (P)

    -

Philosophy or Theology elective - 3 credits needed

    5.

You must have 6 credits, but no more than 6 credits in one of the following the humanities areas:

    a. (CH)

    -

    History

    b. (CF)

    -

    Foreign Language

    c. (CL)

    -

    Literature

The other 6 credits must be from the other humanities area for a total of 12 credits.

    d. (CA)

    -

Arts (only one CA course is allowed)

Writing intensive (W) and cultural diversity (D) courses are usually taken as part of other requirements and not as separate courses. It is strongly recommended to take at least one writing intensive course as a major course. Some majors have incorporated writing intensive and cultural diversity courses into the major and/or cognate. If not, students must take courses in general education or free electives to satisfy the requirements.

Students should usually repeat failing grades in their general education requirements, even if another class will satisfy the requirement. The second grade will substitute for the first grade in the GPA, although the first grade will still be listed on the transcript. Three accumulated Fs that are not retaken will make students subject to dismissal.

Students will not be able to register if their accounts are on 'hold'. Remind your advisees to check their registration status before their registration time. If they have a hold they should take action to resolve the hold, so they can register on time. Refer your advisees to the Registrars Office, if they have questions about holds.

All students, except CGCE students, must take 3 credits of PHED activity courses. PHED activity courses are 1 or .5 credits. Three credit PHED courses cannot be used for the PHED area.

All students, except CGCE students, must have a minimum of 130 credits to graduate.
