Head Coach - Bill Fitzgerald

Bill Fitzgerald

Bill Fitzgerald has been involved with University of Scranton ice hockey for 17 years.

The Needham, Massachusetts native came on board in 1991 and lent his expertise as an assistant for three years before taking over as head coach in 1994.   Since that time, he has led the Ice Royals to a 136-211-11-3 overall record, including a University single-season record 16 wins in 1998.  In addition to being Scranton’s all-time leader in wins and winning percentage, he has led the Ice Royals to three  winning seasons and to 10-or-more wins in a season nine times.

In 2003, Fitzgerald was named the Eastern Collegiate Hockey Association Coach of the Year after leading the Ice Royals to an 11-15-0-1 overall record, including a 9-9 mark in league play.  Scranton also advanced to the ECHA playoffs for the second time in the last four seasons and finished fourth overall.  The Ice Royals once again qualified for the ECHA post-season tournament in 2004 and again placed fourth.  In 2006, Scranton established a record for most wins against ECHA competition with 10 and qualified for the ECHA tournament en route to a 13-11 record.  Included in that mark was a school-record 11 game winning streak. Individually, seven of his players have earned ECHA all-star honors, including Dan Stallone, who own the distinction of being the first first-team selection in Ice Royals’ history.

Fitzgerald has worked diligently to promote the sport of ice hockey in northeastern Pennsylvania. In addition to establishing the Royals’ annual alumni game, he founded and currently serves as director of hockey operations for the Pocono Pirates.  He was also instrumental in starting the ice hockey program at Scranton Preparatory School.  He is ice hockey event coordinator for the Pocono region of the Keystone State Games and serves as supervisor of off-ice officials for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, the minor league affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins of the NHL.

He is a 1969 graduate of Boston College.
